Q: Why does a woman have to stay at home for 40 days after delivery? Also is it normal for the baby to pass motions after every feeding? Nilima (Mumbai, India) |
A: These are traditions which have been and are being followed since time immemorial. In the earlier days confinement was justifiable as the hygienic facilities were perhaps not so good and also women had laborious hard work to do in the house, so this so called 40 day confinement gave them rest and kept them away from strenuous labour which anyway is not advisable immediately after delivery. In addition, earlier women had several pregnancies and did not get sufficient time to recuperate from one, so at least these 40 days gave her some respite from her daily household management routine. In answer to your second question, yes, it is normal for a baby to pass motions after every breastfeed. |
Q: My wife had a caesarean delivery for the second time. She is supposed to take 40 days rest. What does this mean? Can she cook? Arvind (Chennai, India) |
A: She can cook, but she should not lift any heavy weights and should not do any grinding or pounding work. |
