Hi,
I read this in Tarla Dalal's pregnancy cook book today.
The book says it is a myth that consumption of papaya leads to abortion.Papaya is considered hot food and is believed to be harmful during pregnancy. But it's only raw papaya that is bad for you due to the presence of some enzymes which can cause uterine contractions during the first trimester. You can relish a well ripened papaya during your later trimesters as it is a very good source of vitamin A and it serves as a laxative and diuretic.

The book also says most doctors advice against having both papaya and pineapple fruits during the first trimester as these can sometimes cause complications. If u have water retentions during your second trimester both these fruits serve as a diuretic to flush your system.

If u have eaten papaya during the first month, relax ! don't get worried,am sure u would have eaten ripened papaya. If there was a problem , u would have known by now.I too have eaten in the first month and i've been eating them regularly.
If u are scared whether u should be eating them or u are not sure and if eating them makes u worried , i advice u don't eat them at all ! I also advice u to check with your doc.It may relieve your mind.In any case , u can stop eating them in first trimester even if your doc says its ok to eat.

Hi friend,
Papaya and Pineapple both are hot fruit by nature ... in India people advise not to eat the hot food during pregnancy but in western country doctors allows everything. So it depends where are you leaving Asian countries are mostly hot countries so not advisable to eat these fruits...Still ask your doctor ...take care
bye
