Hi All,
I am very much excited as I am going to be a dad. My wife is in her 13th month. She has been on Folic Acid right from we came to know of the news.
But my doiubt is how much FOlic Acid is required per day? I have read in some articles that she should be taking 400mg. But the doctor prescribed 1 tablet each day which is of 5mg.

Is that enough or should the folic acid be more in quantity? Pls clarify.

So sweet to see your involvement in the pregnancy. Your wife's prescription is very much above the requirement. The folic acid requirement is 400 micrograms (mcg). You should feel very much assured.

Here, in the US the normal folic acid dose in a prescription prenatal is 1 to 1.2 mg only. The 4-5 mg level is recommended only in some special cases. But not to worry. The extra folic acid will be passed in the urine.

In addition to the supplement, it is best to consume lots of green leafy vegetables which are a natural source of folate/folic acid. Good luck to your wife!

I have also been recommended same dosage (ie) 5 mg folic acid per day.Am taking Emfolic.

I guess that should be sufficient along with 3 oranges per day.

congrats.if you are in india go to a mediacal shop and ask for 100% folic acid of the conmpany called wyeth labs.She can have two tabs of that..dont worry overdose of folic acid has noside eefects.But most important ask her to consume lots and lots of orange juice.it has abundunt folic acid.mind you...folic acid is very very important as it is instrumental in shaping the back bone of the fetus.
