Crying & Colic:bathing baby
2007-08-08
Name: New mother

Hello, I am 37 weeks pregnant and live in the UK. This is my first baby and my family live in India. My mum will come to help me soon. I just had a question on bathing the baby.Out here they suggest not to bath the baby at all until 1 or 2 months ! But I want to start bathing baby maybe after 24 hours of birth. My question is - how do you bath the baby ? I already have a baby bath stand. Do I give a bucket bath ? HOw long should it last ? Should I use some shower gel or wait for a few weeks before ? Should I just pour water over the baby ? And is it OK to make the umbilical cord wet ? Thanks ! for your advise

you can bath ur baby from day one but u have to take care that the water does not go in baby' s ears. that is the most imp thing. moreover you can use tear free soaps or liquid soaps to wash the babys face. you can use the infant bath tub or put the baby on ur legs. if it is a baby girl, dont forget to clean the discharge she gets for few days.also take care of the cord. all the best and enjoy bathing ur baby.

Hi,
congrats... i m a new mother as well.. what i do is i put my daughter on my legs (keeping the legs stright on bath tub floor ) the babies head should be on ur thaies.. washing the head of the baby is the most difficult task.. rest all will be easier.. ensure that u don' t spill water in her eyes n ears.. that' s it..

Don' t worry dear it seems very difficult .. but is not.. beleive me.. i mean u will know more then anybody else how to handle ur baby.. good luck

You should give bath to your baby from the day one. I live in Canada. You said you bought a baby bath tub. I bought a sponge as well. I gave bath to my baby almost everyday when she was born but you can give her bath every other day. try to keep her cord dry but IT IS OKAY if it gets wet by any chance. Over here Doctors tell us to clean it with WET QTIP anyways.
Clean it atleast once a day. That shud work. Dont worry if your babies cord gets wet but do give your baby bath daily from head to toe.
Best of Luck
