Nidhi/Hetal,
Is it needed that we make the baby sit purposefully. My kid is 8 months old and at times he comes to me and i make him sit on my lap or on the floor with me.

as you said your baby can sit for 5 min without your help, dont make him sit more than that ! actually when the baby starts to sit, its better to give them support all the time...babies dont know how much is their capacity, they just want to do it...
if they are really ready on their own, they will lean forward to sit without support..and will not topple off after 5 mins or even 1hour...
since he feels comfortable in sofa it means he looks for a soft ground to sit..try folding a comforter and then make him sit on that, he will like it..
also, tug a pillows around him(back fully, right and left side), except the front side and let him play with some toy like paino kind of stuffs,,and let him sit supported !
once a while if he leans forward, let him play but not for much time.. slowly increase his sitting withouts support acc to his body signs.dont hurry.

when his backbone is strong enough to support his body, he himself will start playing with pillows or rather lean forward to sit independently !
also i found infant to toddler rocker a good one for new sitters. my baby enjoyed sitting on it, its adjustable and stays upto toddler years.. when she was ready to sit, she leaned forward oneday on it, even though she was tied,,,and then thats all, she never wanted to sit with support ! that is the time you know that your baby is safe to sit independently...
dont force or do early to make him sit early or even when standing is concerned,,the reason being that if you do that, you will be compromising your baby back to be abit tilted and for walking you will end up having bow legs for babies,,if you c some babies or toddler, observe their backs,,if they are leaned forward or abit bend or they like to sit with bend backs even if they are repeatedly told not to do so,,are all the reasons, where parents have made the mistake of trying to make them sit early !!! i dont say its wrong, some kids do get motivated that way, but you have to c how much is your baby capacity first !
and how much his body can afford to hold itself. there have been exceptions however ! but these are the safer standards that i felt that was okay to share.
also, make him sit on sofa corner ! where he has support from both the angles,,so he is safe, and wont drop himself,,he will motivated to sit like that ! and sit with him, talk to him..he will like it when he sees that he too is sitting next to you on the same place ! babies compare that.
just make sure whenever he is ready to sit, his back is straight, which is a sign of good sitting habits and the best time that he can sit independently..
donno worry, there is nothing early or late when it comes to babies,,listen to your baby body signs and for that trust your instincts,,then make him sit,,also sitting is not recommended before 4 months, even though baby is able to sit ! the reason poor backbone !
my baby started sitting at 4 months unsupported for a sec or so, but i made sure that she sits supported until she completed her 5 months whole..and by the time she complted 5 months whole and entered 6th month, she wanted to sit unsupported most of the times and will start playing with pillows :))
so i think that was a good time for me to make her sit independently,,and when i asked dr, he said now i can actually motivate her sitting more times, with such toys and since she was ready,,she started doing that...
hope this gives you some idea,,didnt knew how to explain it in brief :))
so take care and good luck

hello jayashree
dont get afraid and dont loose hopes, your son is absolutely fine, and give him the proper tuition and avoid more playing periods of his, and you should teach him at home when you will get free time.... - praglabh [View Message]
