Due Date Club September 2004:Polyhydramnios

Hello All

Good to see so many messages exchanged within a short interval.Everyone seems fine and enjoying kicks.

I am fine except last friday & saturday when I had gone for my routine checkup and ultrasound. My OB reported that due polyhydramnios(excessive amniotic fluid) I was having a rapid weight gain.On top of that he also mentioned that he couldnot rule out the possibility of gestational diabetes because south asian pregnanct ladies have high chances of GTT.I became totally upset.Underwent my GTT on saturday and got result on monday ..everything is under control....sigh..!!

Other reports from scan:baby's growth,FHB and my blood pressure are normal and under control.

I checked in various websites about repurcursions of polyhydramnios. They have mentioned that there is high possibility of preterm.

Anyway,Is there a way to bring situation under control??

Archana,Congrats on your pregnancy and welcome on board. As Meenu has mentioned rightly Insomnia is a part of pregnancy package.I too am having this problem and wake up at 3:00am and start browsing...and doze off once I feel sleepy again.

Leena,Belated Happy Birthday.I couldnot wish you earlier since I was bit disturbed after my checkup.

Vidhya....no comments from my side...since I am at the opposite end of your problem...rapid weight gain.Anyway I too would second whatever Archie has told as long as growth of baby is normal..no issues atall.

Anyway..take care and will update you all soon about my condition.

Dear PR,

There seems nothing concerning as your Ultrasound report says babys growth and heart rate is fine.
True more or less Amniotic fluid is always a concern, and that's temporary, in many cases situation resolves by itself.

True that more fluid may suggest preterm possibility. To avoid this you have to avoid any heavy duty work. Try to rest in bed. Eat Calcium and protein rich food.
If possible keep out of carbohydrates although you are find with GD. Carbohydrate is one of the culprit behind excess fluid. It would be nice to avoid Sodium intake as well in your diet. Hopefully in another 2 weeks your Am. fluid level come to normal and you may resume your work.

Do not eat white breads or such bakery products. Eat whole wheat stuff. Try to include some fiber diet as well. Avoid sweet fruit juices, better to stick to fresh fruits.

Keep us updated.
Archie

Hi PR,

I had been diagnosed with the same condition at my 24th week appointment. I guess its bcoz indian ladies gain weight differently from Chinese (since u r in Singapore)
In my case too , Dr thought GD, ask me to test, and everything came out absolutely normal.
to improve the condition though, I did change my diet drastically. I cut out absolutely all sugar from my food. Except jaggery in cooking food, no other form of sugar, not even in milk.
Also I changed by breakfast foods from roti/paratha to 1 cup milk, 1 boiled egg, and 1 slice of cheese (these are low carb options)
For lunch dinner, I increased intake of veggies and daal, and reduced the amount of rice and roti.

Basically cut down carbs and sugar and increase protien. Since I am veggie I didnt have too many options, if you eat meat that is the best source of protien and is low carb.

Dont worry, my fluid level came down in 2 weeks, and my Dr is very happy with it. Best of luck !!
If any more concerns, post back... I will reply.

Forgot to add, to limit your fruit intake to 1 fruit a day. and No fruit juices, biscuits etc.

Basically try and follow a GD diet without too much stress. This is because carbs instantly convert to sugar inside tummy, and this will increase amount of sugar in amniotic fluid, which increases weight, and amount of fluid.
