Hi Archie,

Dear Archie,
I have seen so many people pose questions to you and your comprehensive answers. I would like to ask your advice in my case too.

I had my Level 2 U/s on 18th Jan and the report came back with Pyelectasis in both kidneys for the baby. Left Kidney 0.79 and right kidney 0.77.
The gender is Male and all other organs including bladder appear normal according to the report. I had my AFP done in my 16th week and the results were negative. My due date is 21 May and I am currently in my 23rd week.

I am very much worried about these results. The doctor has prescribed another ultrasound in 3 weeks and also genetic counselling. My biggest concern is, is there a greter risk for Down syndrome or other problems based on these results? we have no family history of down Syn and I am 27 years old .I would so very much appreciate any help from you in this regard,

Thanks so much,
Vidya

Hi Archie,
This is my latest update.
I wend for another U/S on Feb13 but the situation remains the same. I am now 26 wks. The Doctor says not to worry too much as everything else seems normal and the condition has not worsened. She said she will have another followup after 4-6 weeks. Hoping for the best and Staying positive. Any advise from you will be helpful.

Thanks,
Vidya

Hi Archie,

We went to genetic counselling today and they said that the risks were minimal. They did offer aminio but also said that since I am now 23 weeks the test carries more risks .Also termination of pregnacy is not an option at this stage(the results get in after only 2 weeks). I and my husband are both 27 years of age with no family history of mental illness. We are now hoping for the best in the next ultrasound which is due on Feb 13th. I will keep you updated.

Thanks a lot for your information.

Vidya

DEar Vidya,
Renal Pelvis is what you are referring to. It's not that uncommon to identify. It's also more prevalent when found in male fetus than female fetus. It certainly has no huge risk for baby.

however sometime renal pelvis is regarded as a down syndrome marker.

I had found two cases here on IP like yours and both were healthy pregnancies at the end. So with that experience I suspect you have nothing much to worry. The confidence also comes from the fact that your AFP test done in 16th week was negaitve, which is what one expects.

given negative AFP and how renal pelvis is common in male fetus I think close monitor by frequent ultrasound would keep your mind at ease and allow one to judge case better.

A genetic counseller would say more about chances.

If you want to take amnioscentis you can talk to your Dr. and with AFP, amnioscentis results your Dr. might alleviate genetic counseller's intervention.

Do not get stressed. By the way how old are you and how old is your spouse?

keep me updated.
Archie

I can imagine the terrible agony you are going through. Have they suggested amniocentesis? I don't know any info about its risk at your current gestational age, but I believe that it can pretty much confirm the chromosomal status of the baby.

Did you ask for that? You and your baby are in my thoughts. I hope only for the best.
