Hair Care:Hair and sweat
2012-02-10
Name: Ravi

Hi,

I recently joined a gym and started on some aerobics. while I do jogging and elliptical, I get lot of sweat in the hair. Needless to say it' s more at sides, back when compared to top. I get headaches due to water retained in the head - Is there a way to prevent this (or) atleast take care after the workout. should I give a serious thought to change my haircut ? It' s so frustrating - please suggest some options. Ofcourse the last option/extreme step that I have is to go for a headshave. please suggest me some options.

Hello Mam Kumuda

I am introducing my self as sarathy from tamilnadu. I have seen ur advise and comments very nice and encouring. I am also the same type of haircut but without clipper.

R u from tamilnadu mam. U like only this type of crew cut. very interesting to know about it.

Dear Ravi,

U experienced a very good haircut at home by barber and ur wife watched the same. IT was a nice experience for her to see haircut in house.
R u from tamil nadu.

Keep the same haircut in future also coz it will help to avoid water stagneting in head and immediately head will become wet.

regards.

Hellow kumuda,At last i got my crew cut today morning.Instead of going to barber shop I invited the barber to our house.I told him to bring manual clippers along with other tools.we arranged the place in our car garrage. As children went to school only my wife and my mill at house.I told the barber the reason for calling him to house is to get crew cut since the shop is busy always. He readilly agreed and asked how mucch part should be clippered.I told him since it is first one inch above the ear should be clipered bald .He immediatly started clippering from back. Really it was a joyfull experiance getting clippered all around. My wife standing at the garrage door watching the process with surprise and joy. In a few minutes he clippered my sides and back complete bald. Then I told him to reduce the hair on the top to half inch length which he did neatly. Then he gave me a good shaving.Watching the proceedings my wife to my surprice told the barber to shave off moustache as well. Thus my crew cut comleted as i expected. The whole proess completed in 40 minutes which included head massage, armpi shaving and nostril hair trimming.Really a new experiance that I enjoyed in my life. The first thing my wife did was touch bald part with her palm and enjoyed fresh feeling. My mill who is an orthodox woman liked my new style Now i have to see my friends and colleauges reaction tomorrow. Then i decide whether to continue this crew cut in future or not.

Dear Kannan
I am glad to know that like my husband and myself, there is another couple who love clippered crew cut. How high is the clippered portion on the back and how high on the sides? What is the frequency of your crew cut with manual clippers?

Dear Rajesh,

Good to know that you are going to get a crew cut. I wish you a nice experience of clippering.

Yes! My husband had tonsured his head in July 2009. See my post dated 2009-07-12 inside the main post ´ To Kumuda´ by Sudhir dated 2009-05-23. It is likely that he may do it again this July.

As for mustache length, I like it clean shaven. But some ladies like it long. So it is your and your wife´ s wish.

Dear Ravi
Sweating after a gym workout is a normal thing and it cannot be stopped. But sweat retained in hair for a long time does cause problem. Of course, head shave is a solution. But not many like to keep their heads shaved regularly. In many religious homes it is not permitted either to shave head except in religious places.

So a better option is to go for a short military cut. Get the sides and back clippered bald to a good height - say to about 2 inches above the ears. The top hair can be trimmed to about half or three fourths inch. Initially this may look odd but people get used to it. You will feel very comfortable with such a cut.
My husband has been sporting such a cut for several years now. Any other cut on him looks odd. I love the look of the fresh clippered sides and back on his head which he gets every 4 or 5 weeks.
So, you can also try this out for a few months. If you and your folks are happy with it you can keep it forever.

Hello Kumudha,

your question is valid, however, all I could see is that it´ s clippered high - I can´ t really say whether it´ s 1.5 or 2 inches - going by the height it´ s clippered bald, I thought it should be 2 inches. Top is cut short but blended such that I can comb a bit at the top. On me liking the cut, I am not sure as I am only getting negative comments. but while exercising it´ s doing great.

Dear Ravi,

Nice to hear that you have got your military cut. I hope that by now you are happy with it.

What intrigues me is that you did not tell the barber how high he should take the clipper to or how short he should cut the top. Without that how did he cut the sides to about 2 inches above the ears? Strange.

Anyway, you have not mentioned how long was your top hair cut. Half inch or 1 inch or two inches?

Are you feeling happy or not? If happy, keep the style. Else, you will get back the hair in two months.

Hello Kumudha,

I got my military haircut last Saturday. I went to a barbershop that´ s little far off from my place. I had to wait outside the shop as the two chairs were occupied. I took the newspaper and was waiting for the turn outside. I heard a familiar voice next to the shop which was a grocery store. I saw my colleague with midlength hair and was smiling at me as she understood why I was there. Without speaking much she went. My turn came and went inside the shop and sat on the chair and a mere coincidence the power went off. I thought of backing out and saying to barber to just trim since my colleague also saw me. The barber after tying the cloth , asked me sir should I cut it short. I asked him assuming he wouldn´ t be having manual clippers to cut him very short at the sides and back using machine. He said fine, took scissors, comb and started cutting the sides and back and reduced the length. Once he thought it ok, he took from the drawer the manual clippers and started at the sides slowly. He moved it higher and higher at the sides a good probably 1.5 to 2 inches above ears. He turned the chair , bent my head and started gradually at the back and repeated clippering such that there were no hairs at the back and came to the other side and repeated the process. Now my top was having good hair but sides and back entirely clipped, totally bald. He took now again the scissors , comb and started reducing the hairs at the top to match the back and sides. I couldn´ t recognize my face at all after the cut. He dusted me and I stepped down from the chair - totally sheared. I gave him the money but had to wait outside to get the change for sometime. My colleague saw me when I waited outside for the change and started staring and perhaps laughing internally.. I thought I should wear a cap and go to work.

But the main thing , the next day in gym was a breeze - it was so cool for me.

My colleague was probably laughing still..

If you want to enjoy the crew cut, get it done with clippers (the back and sides). Scissors should be used only for top.

Hello Kumutha,

thanks for clarifying. sure now I get it - probably Friday or Saturday will go for haircut. will ask the barber to use either clippers or scissors to get such a cut.

I couldn´ t read your past emails - if it´ s too much botheration for you, pleas e share what you felt when first time your husband came with such haircut - he did tell you before getting such haircut - sorry if it´ s asked again.

Dear Ravi
I never said 1.5 to 2 inches at the back. What I said was ´ Get the sides and back clippered bald to a good height - say to about 2 inches above the ears.´ This means an approximately horizontal line around the head about 1.5 to 2 inches above the ear below which everything is clipped bald. At the back it is much higher than the 2 inches you are imagining.

See the posts of Sudhir, Swathi and Kumuda in 2009 for more details of my husband´ s crewcut.

Hello Kumudha,

thanks for your reply. 1.5 to 2 inches above the ears and similarly just 1.5 to 2 inches at the back getting clippered should be ok I think. I hope I understood rightly. It´ s interesting to note that based on your casual suggestion he did - if it´ s something that you can share, can you please say what did you suggest ? sorry to ask you this question - wasn´ t it odd when you went outside after the first cut ( I assume that you having atleast shoulder length hair) - were there curious queries - how did you and husband face them ? just 2 inches at the back wont´ look odd also I think - probably sides alone could have given a different look for the first time - am just curious on what you suggested on this haircut to him, how was his reaction. Btw, I do have moustache , probably may keep it after getting this cut..

Ravi,
Any drastic change in hair style always receives extra attention some positive, some negative. You must be brave and manly enough to take it into your stride. So office environment or whatever, just do not bother. If you wish to do it just go ahead and do it.

My husband is in service and not business. He does not sport moustache. His back and sides are clipped bald to about 1 and half to two inches above the ears. The top gets cut to about quarter to half inch long with a good gradation between the hairy and bald sides. He chose this cut after I made a casual suggestion to the effect. I instantly liked it - the look and the feel. The cut was well received by his parents and myself. Now we are used to it fully.

Rajesh
If you want such a cut, I suggest that you shave of your mustache and shave your face daily.

Also, is it ok to get this cut in office environment ? Your husband is into business or service ? how short is the cut for your husband - it´ s good to know that you have been supportive and probably encouraged the cut ? first of all, any reason why your husband chose this cut - was it received well by relatives, etc..

Hello everyone,
I have medium volume hair but my hair type is very thin and silky. Due to which my hair doesn't hold curls for long hours. I have heard that texturizing spray helps to solve the above problem. Could someone please suggest the good texturizing spray for thin hair?... - Amulya Peru [View Message]
