Health Concerns:AFP -Level 2 sonogram

Hi,

My AFP test in first trimister came negative. They did again in Second trimister, it came out positive for trisomy 18. So my gynec suggested for level 2 sonogram. Yesterday they did this. Doctor said, Baby is just perfect. Physically she has no problem. everything is fine.

My doubt is should i go for Amniosis test or not.

And the doctor mentioned after screening, the chances of down syndrome and trisomy 18 are 1 in 10,280 cases.

How can I decide should I go for Amniosis or not.

I am 29 year old and my husband is 39 year old. Does it matters? and no one in my family are not having this problem

Please help me by giving your suggestions.

Thank you.
Savitha

Hi,

When I was pregnant with my second daughter, they did the AFP test and it became positive in which the chances for down syndrom was 1 in 150. Then, they did the ultrasound and found the baby to be perfect. So the chances reduced to 1 in 300. But when the choice of doing amniocentesis came, the chance of miscarriage was also 1 in 300 as they take the amniotic fluid and that might lead to leakage of the fluid and hence, the miscarriage. When seeing your case, the chances are very very low. So my personal opinion is NOT to go for amnio.

Thanx,
-Rathi Ramachandran.

Subject:  Amnio Test

Hi savitha,

I am right now in my 19th week. I had my down syndrome test in first trimester which came normal and then I again had one in second trimester which came abnormal. My gyna told me that the normal one was much more stronger than the abnormal one so the chances are that everything is normal but if we want, we can go ahead and do Amnio test. Me and my husband decided to go for the test because amnio test is 99.99% accurate as the test is done from the amniotic fluid which surrounds the baby. We knew in our hearts that everything will be normal but just in case if things were opposite we did not want to punish the baby for his/her entire life just because we were scared of knowing the truth or going through another test. Infact just 15 minutes ago I got a call from my doctor that my test results came normal.

As I have experienced it I would suggest that please get the Amnio test done. Its a very short and painless test. The needle inserted to take amnio fluid doesnt feel more like a needle inserted to take blood from your arm.

Let me know what your results were. I am sure your baby is normal and a healthy baby. You may find me in the due date of May 2006 club.

Bets of luck.
Latika.
