Due Date Club April 2007:Worried about hypothyroidism!

Hi, Can some one please tell me if hypothyroidism is very dangerous especially in early pregnancy. Like I said, I have just completed 6th week and I have the first blood test reports in which the TSH is around 6.8 (ref range 0.5-5.5). I have had thyroid problems before, and was taking eltroxin till about 7 months ago when I stopped as everything was under control. The gynae I went to see last week, asked me to do all these tests but told me to come back after 4 weeks. I can't show her the tests now because she is not in town and I am worried about starting the medicine by myself. Can I wait till next week or should I try to see another doctor asap for thyroid medicine? Because of previous miscarriages I am on progestrone as well as hcg injections every 5th day. Will the thyroid medicine react with these?
I am really worried because I am 36 yrs old and after 10 yrs of marriage and three miscarriages, this pregnancy means the world to me.

KB replied. Thanks Archie and Sunil,
I went to see an endocrinologist and he put me on the right dosage. He felt that the risk till now was minimal but I came at the right time and if I had delayed then it might have been more risky. I have to test my T4 and TSH levels again after 2 weeks to regulate the dosage. I am going to see a different gynae recommended by the endocrinologist on monday.
Thanks!!!

In parts three other members gave their right inputs on the problem. You seem to have not read or not commented on their inputs.
Yes, when suffering with hypothyroidism it's always a game of playing with concentration of medicine to keep things in limit, even if TSH is in control. Normally you are not asked to stop medication but asked to reduce the dose.
Since from 11 to 12th week of pregnancy your fetus will start producing own thyroid and might be your TSH is likely to subside it's often that dose of thyroid supplement has to be increased in pregnancy.
Not treating thyroid can lead to low IQ for developing baby. Hypothyroidism is not strictly linked with miscarriages although you ought to weigh good caution in first trimester. It's known however to result in irregular cycles with different flows and sometime anovulatory cycle, weight gain, which adds to irregularity of menses. Since you are pregnant you will need to play with dose of thyroid supplement and by the way 6.8 is high but not radically high to get you alarmed. You can wait until your OB returns and start immediately with supplement. You may also talk to your family physician and see if s/he is in position to prescribe medication. \";I would be against choosing Eltroxin by youself because you will need to play with dose not with the name of medicine\";.

Sunil B V replied. Firstly, I think you shouldnt have stopped eltroxin earlier on when things seemed under control. In any case, so long as you are taking eltroxin (which is perfectly safe to take during pregnancy BTW), you shouldnt have any cause for concern. Hypothyroidism plays quite a big role in anovulatory cycles, infertility etc. However, if you are already pregnant (with 6 weeks...thats really cool...that means the Fetal Heart beat must be already beating at the speed of a rail engine), you have gone past all those hurdles. Yes it is important to keep those levels under control. So I would say since you cant really say your gynaec for a while, it would be a good idea to take your eltroxin again (of course, needless to say, its better to consult an endocrinologist at the earliest). That will certainly keep things in check. Progestorone and HCG injections will certainly take care of all the supplements that your foetus and uterus need in keeping the pregnancy going. And dont be all bogged down about the \";36 years old\"; thing. The earlier miscarriages will definitely make you think negatively, but looking at what you posted, I dont really see a major cause for concern YET. But yes, you MUST see an endocrinologist/your-gynaec in the next day or two and get started on your eltroxin (to ensure we leave no stone unturned).
Pls. keep us all posted on how it goes.
ritu replied. i had the same problem but my doctor said it could be fluctuating during pregnancy.
when i was in 6 weeks my TSH was 0.01 which was very low.in 9th week it became normal(2.92).in 11th week it was 3.08. so may be you have to go through some more tests.
Sathya replied. I would say keep a watch on the thyroid levels becos they are the key values for miscarriage etc. When i was pregnant with my first, doc put me on synthroid as well as progestrone suppositories since i was low on both.
