Hair Care:My aunt and grandma planning for my headshave
2011-03-30
Name: Gayathri

Hello everyone, I am Gayathri from puducherry and new to this forum. I am 18yrs old and just now completed my 12th exams. For a very long time i had an interest to have my nose pierced and do double piercing on ears. I asked my mum, and she said to wait till the final school exams get over, so that the nose will get good time to heal after piercing. By her words, i waited to get my exams completed. On the evening of the final exam my mum took me to a small jewellery shop and i had my left side nose and double piercing on my ears done.

I was very happy as my long term wish got fulfilled and nose piercing looked beautiful on my face. But i never dreamt that it could attract a very bizzare side effect - shaving my head.

As i have a very long time to get into college, my aunt and grandma came home. I was happy and they too said my nose piercing looked beautiful. But they started to discuss about my headshave with my mum without my knowledge.

I have a natural straight hair running till my butts. Genetically my mum' s family have very dense hair, so i too have a very dense hair long till butts. None of mum' s familyside ladies grow their hair long due to more time in maintenance. Manytimes all have advised to cut short my hair, but i didnt.

I grew my hair spending time washing, oiling. I took care of my hair as if any boy would take care of his new bike. During my exams also i washed it once in 3 days and kept it clean and shiny. Once in a week, i soak it in oil and wash it thoroughly. I never used shampoos, all i used was natural herbal powder which my mum prepares with herbals available. When in home i always had chignon hairstyle(making a low bun standing at the back of neck). I love to have that elegant loose chignon type hairstyle.

Till yesterday evening, i never knew about my headshave plan. My aunt offered me help in combing the hair and oiling it. she massaged my head with oil and combed it for morethan 15mins and made a hair-bun of her style that stood gently at the back of the head and didnt rest on my neck. And i liked it as such.

When i asked her how to do hair-bun and asked her to re-do it on my hair to know about how to make it. she asked me why do i need to know about it, and also said It wont be of use to me even though i know it. I was astonished and asked her why ?. Fot that she replied i will be head shaved before coming sunday(3rd apr). My repeated heated questions got a very bizare reply from them. I denied my nose piercing at the age of 15. Now i have completed 18yrs and headshave should be done when nose piercing is done after crossing 18th yr of age. I cried and argued at them, but no way for me to escape. My mum is not so keen to support me. They say that with less hair i can concentrate on studies during college. My grandma and aunt are so stubborn on this. I dont know how to handle this mentally as i love my hair very much and everyone said i looked nice with long denser hair. I never cut my hair more than 0.5cms once in 2 months for avoiding split-ends and to keep all hairs at same length. for me headshave is someting i just cant digest and i am unwilling to part away with my butt length hair. Pls help me out.. Pls..

Hi Gayu,

Just smile, bend and offer ur hair to barber headshave. Dont cry or close your eyes. Watch the strands of hair falling on ur lap. After that rub your hand from pate to nape to find out how smooth and shining it is. Just have a hot water headbath some 2hours before headshave for the last time before bidding adieu to your hair.

As you were going to do headshave in your own house, be happy that no one else other than your mum, aunt and grandma will watch u getting shaved.

Dont keep on worrying about it, cry it out. Leave ur love for your hair now. Vent all your worries out here, we are here to hear from u and support u. All the very best for your headshave. Do post your experience about ur headshave once it is completed.

Hi Gayathri,

Dont worry dear. I know it is easy to say this but hard to execute it. Bcoz I also have undergone the headshave experience without my wish.

Even ur case is like an unwilling headshave. But if it is inevitable, just feel as if the hair is not ur and make ur mind saying that u will be clean shaved bald in few days. Loose love on ur hair. Remember that ur clean shaved pate will be seen by everyone in very near future.Since it being summer i think this will help u out of sweat. Dont cover ur pate with any synthetic scarfs. Only use cotton.Avoid covering when u r at home.

At the time of headshave dont get scared and move. That may cause hurt to ur shaved pate. just bend down and do what barber says. Apply chandan after headshave. Cry out completely after headshave ones. That may help u out from the depression of the headshave experience.

Anyways keep smiling always, when things are inevitable.

Hi Spandana, thanks for your valuable confidence boosting message. I made up my mind not to argue anymore with my grandma and aunt.

If they say so, i have to do so and i will do so.

I didnt loose love on my hair but have convinced myself for headshave. As per your experience i will get my pate coated with chandan after headshave. Thanks for sharing your experiences, i will surely follow them.

Its not right or wrong either way, It is something i should do smilingly for my grandma, aunt and my mum´ s sake as a token of my love on them. My hair is nothing in front of their love, care and affection. Its ok, i can & i will get back my denser 40-inch lengthier hair in another 5 to 6years.

when you going to get your headshave...i think this is your first time to getting your headshave. don get tensed or shake your head while the barber shaves you,coz it ll hurt your head.they ll apply water nicely on your head and they ll seperate your hair in two braids and they ll start shaving from your crown..in matter of 10 min they ll completely shave your head smoothly.it is nice feeling to shave your head gayathri..after finishing your headshave you itself tell.god bless you do your headshave well

Thanks Jayashree for ur confidence boosting valuable advise in that reply/message.

Yes, ofcourse its my first headshave. First of all i am not worried what other ppl/students will think about me. i am just worried to shave all my 40inch thick dense hair.

I have been convincing myself, even if i stand upside down also, it cant be avoided. The morer i resist, the morer my grandma and aunt will put pressure on me. Which i dont want.

The following are the series of incidents that happened yesterday. Leaving out every thought i became calm and forgot about the headshave matter in the morning. I started speaking naturally with my grandma and aunt. for a final try i asked my grandma whether any other thing can be done in lieu of headshaving. she said if anyother option was there she would have told before. So no other way to go. My grandma asked me to take headbath for the last time. And said that if the priest/astrologer(they consulted family temple priest as it is related to custom/ritual followed heriditarily in my family) says to shave now, then headshave will be easier and convenient as headbath will make my hair soft and gentle for the whole day.

The very next moment my heart beat jumped naturally. My aunt came and she willingly gave me a spl headbath, then she dried and detangled my hair with hair brush. It was a very nice experience as my hair are being taken so much care by my aunt. From starting to end she did everything during my headbath, this proved how much love, care, and affection she has on me. she gave me a moral support for my headshave by speaking out openly. And also she asked me to keep my hair loose & free without plaits/braids till headshave.

My grandma and mum came after getting the auspicious date. Its friday(today)/saturday is the d-day for me to bid farewell to my hairs. While returning they have asked a local barber to visit our house today. So by evening everything will be done and finished.I thought they will take me to temple as it is a custom/ritual based thing, but to my surprise they said that my head will be shaved in the backyards of my home. They asked me to get ready for that, i gave them a reluctant yes for headshave.

Hi saritha,

I am tensed, but i am worried to lose my butts length hair. As a women, u know how hard it is to get a hair upto that length. You are right, once shaved all my hair as well as my prime identity will go off and a new-distinguished-unique look will come.

My aunt and grandma where stubborn about this day before yesterday, but yesterday she herself took the job of massaging and combing my hair. I cant pull back my hair from her as i need to take care of it till its with me. They began convincing me for headshave.

I am in a miserable situation, i cant deny headshave due to the love and affection my aunt & grandma shower on me. At the same time i cant accept due to the love i have for my hair.

hi anitha, how not to be sad. I Dont know when and where will it be done. My be today/tomorrow (i should be eveready for it). Its really sad, worrying, i am unable to sleep, eat or do anything.

Argued a lot about that stupid custom/tradition followed in my family. But no way, they have answers for everything. After all i cant argue beyond a certain point and have to smile them bec my grandma and aunt both love me so much as i am the only grand daughter/gal child (my aunt had only sons) in the entire family.

But still i cant convince myself.
