Due Date Club September 2004:fundal height

Name: chini sk

Hi Archie,

This is me again!!!

Wanted to know 2 things....
1. How to measure fundal height?
2. In mothers who have big bellies.... do they have more amniotic fluid? Why is there a difference? If I am having a normal sized baby in my womb, that means it has very little space compared to a woman with a big belly.

I am worried about giving birth to a small baby. This time I do not have anybody assisting me post delivery. So I want a healthy baby with normal weight. My daughter was 6 1/2 pounds and my belly was bigger than it is now.

Thanx in advance.

Dear Chini SK,
I replied post of yours once before and today to Parul under your post.

The size of belly does not really matter much, as long as your ultrasound reports say all is well and healthy-just sway your worries.

Fundal height is something lately I wrote a lot on different month club. It's very common practice to measure uterus height in USA. Measurements start way at your pelvic bone where uterus base exit and goes all the way up to the uterus top. Although they measure here, if descrapancy exist with weeks and measurement of fundal height, Dr. will not worry if your ultrasound suggest development is appropriate.
Fundus height often varies from case to case and often 15% girls measure low to their gestation while 8-10% measure more to their gestation.

Both type of girls deliver healthy baby.

Chini, you should take it easy, relax and not to stress a lot. Your stress will affect more than anything on your moods and your digestion pattern, indirectly new life in you.

If you worries ask for an ultrasound and see what's size of your baby.

May be after your first baby you gained a little more pounds and this is what causing some trouble. If this is not the case, have this query for your Dr.

By the way your 6.5 pounds baby is more than healthy. Even if you deliver 5 pounds 14 ounce they call baby in normal weight zone.

I don't think belly size means any way to determine amniotic fluid quantity, never heard that. I won't say about it as I don't think that's the case or know what it means. Your Dr. may help you with this query. But the belly large from the beginning may mean bay is going to be on highter weight side, but can't be certain again.

If you think you have less amniotic fluid let me say you don't have that problem. Less amniotic fluid will result in pain in lower abdomen. Your urine will be darker in color as this is a sign of dehydration. You can notice your lips dry.

If your urine is pale colored, no dryness in lips and no contractions or continued lower abdominal pain then be assured that all is normal. If you face any of these symptoms then keep drinking lot of liquid:)

Hope these will answer your query.
Archie
