hello everyone,
i have a 6 year old son rahul and we are planning to tonsure his head and conduct the ear piercing of the lobes.as my husband had a job in the U.S,we are able to perform the ceremony now only.i have certain doubts about this ceremony.
1)what is its significance?
2)how many piercings should be done(is it one for each ear?)
2)what sort of earrings should i make him wear?
3)how many years should he wear earrings?
4)is it a must to to make him wear anklets and bangles?
5)can he eat non veg after the ceremony?

yesterday we returned from samayapuram temple after rahul' s ear boring

ceremony.it was great and we enjoyed the trip.our josiyur told us that

it would be higly beneficial if rahul wears a birthstone earring.but

we had already bought the kundali earring for the ceremony,hence we

decided that he should wear both the earrings.it was decided that

myself,my older daughter shreya,my mother and father would be going to

samayapuram which was our kula deivam.we went there last monday and

stayed at the sangam hotel.next morning we left for the temple very

early as we thought the crowd would be less,but we were wrong and

there was a long line for tonsuring.after waiting for 1 hour,it was

our turn.during the ceremony,as a lot of hair will fall,I had to

remove rahul' s clothes but i had forgotten to bring diapers which set

me off praying that the inevitable should not happen. we made rahul

on shriya' s lap as our family tradition dictates that the ceremony

must be performed on the boy by an unmarried girl.we told the barber

to tonsure slowly,to avoid any cuts.the barber parted rahuls hair into

two,and began shaving.a lot of fallen hair and 15 minutes later,the

tonsure was finished.after giving him a good bath.then it was time for

ear boring.we appointed a woman for this as we felt they will be more

gentle.while i held his hands shreya held his head in position,then in

a second the woman pierced his right ear and inserted the earrings and

groved the screw behind the ear lobe,rahul showed some resistance but

we managed to pierce his left ear as well.next the birthstone earrings

which was quite small and easily it was pierced on to his ears,though

he cried he was back to his normal self in 10 min(phew!).then rahul

wore his new clothes and we had a fantastic darshan in the samayapuram

amman temple.it was a very memorable trip,and we have decided to go

yearly on such trips and to tonsure rahul as it is very beneficial

especially as it improves physical hygiene and he looks adorable with

his earrings jingling and a bald head.we plan to remove his earrings

after 3 years and till then no non veg for him and who knows may be

forever.my daughter also is very happy to see the ceremony performed

on her younger brother and wouldnt stop hugging him.thats it for now.





sowmya replied. thank uou aditi and radha,we are going to put mottai and kadhu kuthu for rahul,this tuesday in samayapuram amman temple.tommorow we are going to buy his earrings,also we decided that no need for bangles or any ornaments as that would make him look like a girl(a cute boy rather).my mother in law wants to pierce his nose ,as it is customary in their traditions.as radha and aditi pointed out,regular tonsures would be beneficial and we have decided to tonsure him every year.bye everyone,for now. aditi replied. hi sowmya
it is nice to see that you are going to perform this important ceremony on your son.maybe you could have done it much earlier(maybe in the U.S itself)

1)sins from previous birth are erased when tonsure is performed.piercing of ears is beneficiak to the eye,and helps maintain the balance between male and female energies.

2)though earpiercing of the lobes in both ear is enough,consider piercing the helix of ur sons ear on both ears,as it has many advantages.

3)you can make him wear any earring made of gold.if you feel studs are boring,you can consider ring type or a karn phool type earring.

4)i feel he must wear the earrings for atleast two to three ears.as the hole formed during to the piercing should not close.also wearing of bangles etc is not compulsory.

5)it is a MUST that he should not eat non veg atleast for for 3 yrs.

also u can tonsure ur son regularly as it improves hygiene and requires less maintanence.best of luck aditi replied. hi sowmya

You should have done both mottai and kadu kutthu much earlier than his 6 years. Anyway, better late than never.

1. Significance of tonsure. Bad traits from previous birth is supposed to be in the birth hair roots. So it is advisable for a complete tonsure in the 11th month or certainly before he/she completes 3 years. Better do it at least twice in a religious mode so that the solemnity is manifest. In your case, the offspring in question being a boy, you can encourage him to have an annual religious tonsure in a religious place. It keeps the head physically clean and gives a mental soothness one cannot define.

There are fine nerve endings in the earlobes and if they are pricked and in constant touch with gold it is beneficial for both physical and spiritual health.

2)Symmetric piercings should be done in each ear lobe. Only one in each ear is sufficient - at the centre of the lobe. Piercing only one ear will set up imbalance of traits.

3) The earrings / earstuds HAVE to be of gold and should be small.

4) He can wear them as long as he likes. He should have them at least for a year. But should have it in both ears - not one.

5) Better keep off non-veg for a year. Never should he eat beef or pork. But the best is to stop non-veg food forever.
