I have been reading other peoples experiences on here to get me some courage to fulfill my longest waited vow at thirupathi.As I live in Us I was hesitant to go completely bald.Even after making taking a vow I kept postponig it.
My parents got me tonsured in thirupathi when I was 19 yrs old and in college. I was not happy getting tonsured at that age like any other teenager.But I had to get my headshaved. But after going through the process I really liked my smooth shining gundu. But I coverd it with a big scarf to go to college.Back then they were using knifes to shave. Now they got diposable blades.
So after 20 years (I live in US now). I finally made it a point to go to Thirupathi in my recent visit.
After landing in India, My husband did not make it this time, I went with my daughter and son to Inida.I told my MIL about the vow to go to thirumala and about headshaving.
She said she had a vow to fulfill too and would join me.
My older brother made all the necessary arrangemnts for our visit to thirumala.
I went with my kids and MIL.
Finally we landed in thirpathi.
I reqested the guest hose manager to send the barber to the cottage.
We all got freshed up finished our breakfast.The kids were eagerly waiting to see the whole process. The last time they got tonsured was as kids , they dont remember anything now.
Finally the barber came.I told the barber as I cant sit on the floor due to knee pains, I will sit on a chair, he said no problem. I also requested him to shave slowly and I really wanted a close and smooth shave.
My MIL wanted to get her headshaved first. I placed a chair outside the cottage. My MIL sat in the chair, she has really long hair up to her waist. She opened her hair and sat in the chair. Barber wetted her hair , massaged for a few minutes separated her hair into 2 portions and tied into 2 knots on the sides of the head.and started shaving her head.
He started at the back finished one side of her head first, the first hair knot fell in her lap.
He repeated the other side of her head, the 2nd knot fell on her lap.
the barber repeated to shave the entire head again and made it really smooth.
My MIL got up touching her smooth head.Wow he really did a good job she said.
Kids were taking her pictures during all this process.
Now my turn came. As I already told him I wanted a smooth shave, I sat in the chair and surrendered my head happily. I have shoulder lenght hair. He wetted my hair and as it is short to tie up he left it as is and started his job.
When he first placed the razor on my head it was a unusual feeling, I closed my eyes and satrted to enjoy that scraping sound.Slowly I saw the hair falling on my lap.
He started in the center and completed the front , I was looking like a old bald man with half of the front head shaved, my kids took pictures.
Then he statred on the sides and completed the back. He ran his razor slowly again all over the head and shaved it really very smooth. Once he completed he said I can get up.
I got up touched my head, it was really so smooth.My kids touched my smooth head to feel it.
My daugher and son both said they would like to shave their heads too.
I was so happy, I did not want to force them, but I always wanted that.
They both got their heads shvaed happily.
I gave a big tip to the barber he was happy too.
Finally all of us were happily tonsured. Kids and me could not keep our hands off of our smooth gundu.I thoroughly enjoyed my smooth gundu.
None of us coverd our heads till we finished darshan.
My MIL decided not to cover afterwards too.So did I.
I finsihed the rest of the trip in India going around bald without covering my head.
After my 3 weeks vacation,I am back in US now.
