Due Date Club December 2006:Archie and others ..(AFP)

hi,

I had my AFP test done on july 13th and july 26. the first one was above the normal (2.5) about 2.86. The second test showed a value of 2.55. We heard about false positives and wanted to get a second opinion. but the result was again positive.

I am confused why the values came differently and should we go for an amnio. I had my level 2 ultrasound which showed that everything was normal.

The doctor was saying amnio is upto us. she says the risk of having a baby with neural tube defects is very low.

I am worried about the miscarrages by going for an amnio.

Please advice.

thank you archie and chafa for your replies..

i am 28 and my doctor said the risk is low but because the test results are not normal, she said amnio will give you re-assurance that everything is ok.

We decided to go for Amnio and it is done in the hospital which my doctor said would be more experienced than her.

I am keeping my fingers crossed.

Thanks again,

sj

Good luck SJ.
It's better to enjoy pregnancy after confirming all is well with you by amnio than leaving negativity in the mind for rest of pregnancy and may be some regret for the life.

Hi sj,
I am from NOV board. AFP has different values according to weeks. So if you have done 1st test on 13th and 2nd on 26th, the values are going to be different. You did not mention your age and about how much risk figure dr. gave it to you. As Archie said doing amnio is a personal decision and very hard to make it. Archie helped me a lot for making decision of amnio. I am the person who makes lots of worries so I thought I can not go till end without worrying which will make my pg miserable. After amnio gave normal results I am enjoying my pg. Now about miscarriage rate with amnio is very low if dr who does it has good expertise. Look for \";Fetal medicine specialist\"; rather than gyn. Ask for his miscarriage rate..Mine was 1/400 which is supposed to be low. I have done amnio twice without any complications. So my advice to you is consider your age, risk figure and then decide. (Ultrasound is not fool proof...it just gives 50% assurance). I know you will be more confused after reading my message but that is the truth you have to face.....Best of luck and if you need more info, I will be glad to help you out.

amnios is an absolute solution but it will be your personal choice.
