guys,my parents hav decided to do upanayanam for my little bro,arvind,who is studying in standard 6.
we hav a dilema whether to perform the ceremony in the traditional way,which involves tonsuring the head and leaving a kudumi and ear piercing and wearing a golden earring.being his elder sister I feel that the traditional way is a must.what do u guys feel?pl comment sowmya replied. upanayanam is an important ceremony,and it is a must that it should be carried out traditionally.very happy to see that this ceremony was conducted on your bro.pl ask ur bro to adorn the tonsure and to wear the earrings pierced on his lobes.though it may seem feminine,it does not matter. aditi replied. thank u shruthi,yes he has to eat only veg food,and the next time we go out for a meal,i can taunt him no end by eating chicken nuggets(he loved those). shruthi replied. hi aditi

the ceremony went very well,my bro is a proper ' brahmin boy' .first the tonsure ceremony took place.we plaited his hair into two.he ast on my lap,and i held his hands tightly.the barber slowly shaved his head but left the kudimi portion alone.then i bathed him and dressed him in a small towel for the ear piercing.we had called a woman who worked in a parlour for ear piercing him.while i held my brothers head ,the woman pierced his lobes,my bro began to cry:((boys are such babies)then i inserted a karn phool earring(an earring with a floral pattern),though it was for girls,it suited him,and after sometime he didnt mind wearring the earrings(he lookes sooo cute) aditi replied. guys,we are going to perform the ceremony in the traditional way,though my bro sulked a bit about getting his head shaves.As per our customs,the boy must have 3 braids of hair(ie hair must be long enough to be below the shoulder).so we have to wait for a some time,to let his hair grow and then shave it(whats the point?).
as for the earrings we are going to make him wear kundan earrings(ornamental ones with a spherical thing hanging from the stud).message u guys about the experience soon.c ya pallack replied. hi aditi
i think it is best to go the traditional way.tell ur little brother that tonsure and ear piercing wont be painful,though it involves a little discomfort.make sure he wears the earrings on both ears.also what sort of earring do you plan to make him wear? Radha replied. If traditional way of tonsure and ear-piercing is not followed the tradition of upanayanam is half done. The full spiritual effect of upanayanam is possible only if the boy is properly tonsured. So please go ahead and encourage your brother to don the tonsure (bald all over except for the kudumi) and earrings (in both ears). Initially some friends may tease but if he is encouraged to be steadfast friends get used to him to be like that.
