Normal Delivery:Very confused about Episiotomy

I had inquired that most hospitals routinely undertake episiotomy in all cases, ie a small cut in the virginal opening to bring the babies head out. But recently i read in the book -what to expect when you are expecting- it shouldnot be done expect in problem cases. There is no benefit to it and infact causes complications as per American College of Obstetricians and gyneacs. They say episiotomy should be avaoided as it causes more chances of blood loss and infection and without it the baby comes out just as easily.
If thats true what do you think we should do to convince the doctor otherwise as the doctor i met said its a normal process and would be followed?

it is necessery in half of the cases otherwise you may rip the skin which is not good for you. it is not painful as they give injection before the cut so you wont feel it. yes after the effect of injection is over you may feel a pain but they will give you painkillers which will take care of your pain. it will completely heal within two weeks. you can start walking from second day, walking is good for healing so is washing it with warm water. by that time you can sit on soft coushion. if possible put a drop of pure lavender oil in warm water it will be comforting and make it heal nicely. imp is always keep it clean and dry.
honestly speaking episiotomy is better then ripping and far far better then c-section.

hi gs,

well doctors do episiotomy to ease of the delivery. if they don' t do it, while pushing u can rip the skin and it is very painfull. there are no infections or bleeding casued by doing episiotomy.
you will get few stitches and it will heel in 10 to 15 days. u won' t even feel it.
i have done it and it was done beautifully. i coldn' t feel a thing. i started walking and going up and down the stairs right after my delivery.
so don' t worry and do not think too much. wiat for the time.

take care

Dear All,

I'm Dr. Meghna Bharath. I'm a strong proponent of Natural Birthing.

In the run-up to becoming a Mom myself, I prepared for Natural birth and delivered naturally. Recently I encouraged and supported my younger sister and close friends deliver naturally as well [through remote advice, since we were across a 10-hour timezone :)].
