Hi all,

I am new to this board but read a few messages before.

I am a second time mom. I have a 3 yr old daughter. Had lot of nausea in the 1st trimester but now i am doing good. I am in my 19th week. I am in NJ.

I have a question for everybody about the AFP test (Alpha Fetpprotein). Is it an optional test or your doctors are suggesting to go for it. I have taken the test but the results came positive. she said one of the hormone levels is a little high than normal. She suggested that i go for a level II ultrasound next week.

I don't remember taking the test during my first pregnancy.

I am a little scared about the whole thing.
Please input.

Hi,
Some doc. say its mendatory some do include in there practice and in some state it is mendatory. And since you are from NJ i know its doc. to doc. My personal openion is to take it .If the Results are little unexceptable like my friend had then they do level 2 or do amnio.(mostly over 35 yr. they do it anyway and in some due to not good result with AFP also they do this )But in your case since she is little consern but this AFP they don't really fully since result come out false many times but don't go crazy about it hope your level 11 ultrasound come out clean they do it prepare you and them for the situation but pl. don't worry i have seen so many AFP coming out false but then they tend to do level 2 or amnio which is painful so they want to see if there is a need take care and don't worry .

Hey,

The test is optional and is offered at most of the hospitals .... it is possible tha it was not as widespread 3 years back and u were not offered at that time ...

i had read that false positives do occur in thsi test, so try not to worry too much ,

my personal opinion is that it might be betteru go with the u/s and if nothing is wrong , atkeast it will ease ur mind as otherwise for the next so many months, that thought will be lurking in one corner of ur mind ..

tkae care,
-P
