Hi moms,

I found this list I saved for my first baby shopping. This is really useful since it says name brands/shopping places. I edited some based on my inputs too so first timers can use it. Walmart/target are good when they have sale for specific items. They are all same brands, so no question abt quality being different if you buy in babies r us or walmart/target. Defenitely the later ones are better pricewise for the same item.

Crib/crib mattress – get the one which is convertible as bed – can be used for long time
Crib bedding set - from walmart
Crib mobile - Any
Travel system - Graco(check for recalls)
Bath tub - Safety First
Diaper disposal – One that uses regular garbage bags
Diaper bag – hospital will give u
1 pack of new born diapers - Pampers
Diaper wipes – Pampers
Wipes warmer – if u r in cold region
Bottles/Nipples(if u want to bottle feed) - Playtex Vent air/avent with microwave sterilizer – can buy later if you are going to bf for initial months
bottle brush, bottle rack - Any
Baby clothes(wash cloths-3, receiving blankets-3, burp cloths-2, onesize-6(0-3 months), coveralls-6(0-3 months), new born size take home from hospital, hooded towel-1, winter blankets-2, Bibs(buy later), caps-3, socks/booties/mittens-3 pair) - Walmart/Babiesrus
Bouncer - Walmart (Any) – buy it later-it is used after 2 months
Nursing pads - Any. You get in hospital. U can buy later if u need it.
Baby monitor - required if u r not in a 2 level house – safety 1st
Rubbing alcohol – for cord until it falls - babies r us – get premoistened ready to use towlettes pack
Baby thermometer – it comes with baby grooming kit. u can buy it separately. Other things in baby grooming kit was useless. I bought forehead thermometer recently useful for any age and very easy to use on sleeping baby too.
Nasal aspirator - hospital will give u
nail cutter- Safety first
Medicine spoon/dropper – it was there in baby grooming kit, but of no use. All medicines come with their own dropper.
Baby needs (brush, baby shampoo-J&J head to toe, dove soap for body(if having rashes with J&J), j&j baby oil, j&j/aveeno baby lotion, vaseline petroleum jelly-to apply during each diaper change )
Laundry detergent – Dreft(wash all/new clothes before putting on baby)
Humidifier - Any
Diaper rash cream – Desitin – buy when required.
Cream for breast Soreness from breast feeding - Lansihno
Cloth diapers – didn’t use
Breast milk storage kit to put in the freezer – buy when required-anything where r u can write the date bm is expressed
Breast pump – bought medela single electric – don’t use until bf is well established. buy later when required.
Sanitary pads - Hospital will give, but you' d have to buy the heavy duty ones for home(lots of them) after you are back as there will be heavy bleeding in the initial days after delivery. You will hv it for 1 month(can go more or less) after baby is born(especially if breastfeeding).


(If you are in US)Things first time parents don’t know of:

Whatever the hospital provides for your baby like clothes, mittens, aspirator, blankets, diapers, formula, anything used for your baby, comes with your baby – you can take it home. You can save the diapers they provide with your baby to take home too. It’s all covered in your insurance, you are not stealing anything. Also they will provide a diaper bag under the baby’s bed. Its for your baby too.

i cant tell you what a relif your post gave me. I' ve been breaking my head deciding which brand and where to buy the stuff from. Its really overwhelming the first time, you just cant make up your mind on which brand to go with. I was just about to write a post requesting anyone to help with where to shop and which brad to go with.

So a heartfelt thanks to you.

Another things which is bugging me is which car seat/stroller to buy. i am having a hard time deciding whether to go with a Travel system(graco quattro) or for separate car seat and stroller.which is more convinient and economical ? I read that graco travel systems are sturdy and safe but bulky and heavy. they are difficult to fit on shopping carts etc.Any suggestions friends will be helpful.
