Due Date Club February 2003:Hi Everyone

Hi Everyone,
How are you? Just thought I would drop a note and say hi to all! Well, I am still managing the gestational diabetes bit..ironic how so many of us now have discovered we have it. Now my Dr. instead of 1 insulin shot in the morning has increased it to 2 insulin shots..plus the 4x a day finger poking.

I am not complaining, but sometimes I get so down about it. Its not easy getting shots, as my husband admininsters to me every morning and night..he is GREAT, I don't know what I would do without him. Plus I am working still Full-Time, cooking managing the house, etc..the only releif is that I have a House Cleaner that comes 2wice a month to clean. What to do, we have to remain strong, but sometimes I get so down about the GD and insulin shots, I really cry!

My Due Date is February 2nd. I am posting from USA/Michigan, and I was born in Jullunder, India..My husband is South Indian from B'glore, so we go there quite often. My parents live here, and my in-laws are coming in April for a few weeks.

I just want to ask you all to pray for me and everyone else. Everything will be alright. I am getting scared/apprehensive as the time nears..Feb 2nd is just around the corner. Its so nice to have all of you to post to..its like a family now isn't it??

I am so hungry on this GD diet, plus insulin,,even if I eat something sweet,,just a little of it my sugar level goes up...I have been avoiding fruits which make my level go up. So hang in everyone..I know its not easy...after work, I get so tired, I just want to sleep, but I get up and cook..My inner thighs near my Pelvic region hurt so much that I cry in pain, the Baby is putting pressure there.

Take care all, and lots and lots of Love,
Ritu
P.S. Have any of you gone in for a Non-Stress Fetal Test..I am going in for one every week..all of us who have GD must go in for one.

Hi everybody with GD,
I am also sailing in the same boat. Just for your info. eggs are good as it has lot of protein and hardly any carbo and as my doctor told me it is good if you add protein along with your meal. I am veg. so meat is out, else meat is a good idea to fill up.

Even when I eat little more my sugar shoots up. Try taking snacks between your meals. It will not make u so hungry at meal time. There's no harm in eating rice instead of roti. As long as you limit it to 2/3 rd cup or 1 max. Even roti has enough carbs. I have noticed that I can take good heavy breakfast without sugar shooting up as in the morning sugar is low.
Will try bari ki roti and see the effect. Thanks for suggestions. My due date is 20th Feb and I am in Atlanta, USA.

Bye & take care
Roma

I don't know much about GD but you can try eating Karelas not too much though cuz they are hot..

And try eating boiled rice instead of regular ones.. just boil it and thow the water, this will take all the sugar from rice & won't harm you specially with curry :-) its really filling and you can eat as much as you want.. In my first trimester i preety much survived on curry & rice.. sometimed I use to eat only curry with very little rice.. I prettty much use to drink curry but believe me you won't get hungry afterf that.. no matter how many times to eat this it won't harm your sugar level..

Good luck

Ritu,I really feel v sad to read your msg..Dont worry yar...Few more weeks to go and everything will be fine...Good to hear abt u'r hubby's support too...
Hey, I know how tempting it is to eat rice esp. when u r not supposed to...heard that brown rice is good..so am just browsing for good recipes..will keep u posted if anything is good..also heard ragi(bajra powder) is good(if I'm not mistaken)its v good to keep the sugar level under control itseems..
saw this recipe and tried making it..
try soaking the raagi powder with little salt and add seperately soaked and ground urad dal to it and make dosa..adding onions on top of it, helps to push this one inside..well, if i come across anything else will keep u posted...in case u know any such recipes do write in...
take care and keep posted whenever u find time..
luv,
vidya

hey Ritu, I know one Ragi roti but its made with the Jaggery, the black ones(karupati in tamil)..well i dont want to write abt it right now and make both of us mouth watering..Lol! u know what, though I've eaten it earlier(2-3 yrs back), I made it only 2 weeks back and ate almost all of them...haha! no wonder my glucose level raised ...I've been eating all sweet stuff right from the time 2'nd tri. started(though I dont really crave much sweets)anyway its no use repenting for it ;-)!!

well, just now I did this ragi dosa..I tried soaking ragi in laban(buttermilk)with salt and added the grounded urad dal, onions, green chillis to it.. it tastes great.(I added the urad dal batter approximately...anyway its not carbo and I guess it wont do any harm if we eat it any level)..Like I said I ate this dosa earlier by soaking ragi in water..it was horrible..this one is good...just had this with a side dish...I hope u too like this taste..
reg. brown rice, didnt find the rice or the recipe either...will let u know once i find a good recipe...

heard bitter gourd is good in controlling the sugar level..

will msg u if I come across anything ..
hey u've written that cashews almonds are ok..are u sure they r not carbo?
also eggs?

take care yar!
U'll be in my prayers!
luv,
vidya

Hi Vidya,
While in Bangalore last X-mas I discovered my Mom-in-Law making "Ragi Roti". So that is supposed to be good for sugar problem? Maybe I will try and make it..I usually put onions, chilis, and salt in it. Any suggestions..My cooking hand is still Punjabi, but I am learning South Indian.

Thanks yaar for the comforting thoughts..just Pray for me.

Lots of Love,
Ritu

Hi Shannu,
Thanks for your warm advice..it really means a lot! I have been meaning to post but just get so busy with work and home. How are you doing?

Yes, you are correct Shannu, with rice the sugar really goes up..but I have it in very small quantities,,maybe 1/3 cup..you could try it like that..but you know the temptation to eat more is always there. Aren't you so hungry on this diet? I am so hungry all the time, I wish I could eat what the other Moms w/o GD are eating! I crave sweet stuff, cakes, cookies, chips..bad junk food I guess..

Yesterday I had chole for dinner with a bit of rice and spinach subzi, and there went my reading,,all the way up,.,but I was so starved I could eat anything.

Try and eat almonds(badam), cashews, the protein lasts longer. I used to eat a mostly vegge diet, with some meat/eggs, but my Dr. told me to increase my protein intake, especially at this stage...So please try doing that!

Take care Shannu and thanks for your comforting message. By the way where are you from in India. and where do you live here?

Take care and lots of love,
Ritu
