Acne, also called pimples or zits, is a result of hormonal interaction with the skin’s oil glands (sebaceous glands), which leads to plugged pores and outbreaks of lesions—the pimples that we usually see on our face.
Many factors can cause hormonally related acne, including puberty, pregnancy, or starting or stopping birth control pills. The tendency to develop acne may be inherited from parents, while certain drugs, including androgens and lithium, are also known to cause acne.
Even though nearly 17 million people in the United States have acne, each case is unique. You may recognize your own acne as falling into one or more of the following categories:
Non-inflammatory comedones (KOM-e-doans): The most common form of acne, these basic acne lesions are simply enlarged and plugged hair follicles.
Micro-comedones are a buildup of sebum (oily secretion) and other skin matter—such as bacteria and pigment—underneath the skin’s surface.
If the comedones stay beneath the skin, they are called closed comedones.
This type of acne produces a white bump called a whitehead.
A comedone that reaches the surface of the skin and opens up is called a blackhead. Although it may look black on the skin’s surface, this discoloration is not due to dirt. Both whiteheads and blackheads may stay in the skin for a long time.
Inflammatory lesions: Papules form when overloaded hair follicles spill their contents onto the surrounding skin tissue. They appear as small bumps, and are usually red, swollen, and tender. Red pimples are inflamed papules that usually appear as small, pink bumps on the skin and can be tender to the touch.
Sometimes these papules are topped by pus-filled pimples called pustules that may be red at the base. These are caused by the body’s white cells attacking a clogged hair follicle.


COMMON ACNE MYTHS....
“Junk food causes breakouts.” False!
Chocolate and greasy foods are often blamed for causing pimples, but diet seems to have little effect on the development and course of acne in most people. Of course, eating healthy foods and getting the proper nutrition are important to maintaining good health—including healthy skin.
“Dirty skin causes acne.” False!
Many people believe that dirty skin causes acne. Blackheads and other acne lesions are not caused by dirt, but keeping blemished skin clean IS important. Some people with acne may try to stop outbreaks and oil production by scrubbing their skin and using strong detergent soaps and rough scrub pads. However, scrubbing will not improve acne; in fact, it can make the problem worse.
