Due Date Club December 2006:Anyone having the AFP testing?

Hi!

Catching up after a very long time.. good to see everyone is doing well!!

I didn't hear anyone mention having the AFP or the Triple test screening... I'm scheduled to have one on june 30th in my 16th week. I read in a lot of books they do it normally, but since i didn't hear anyone else having it , i was a little worried...

I hope everything is fine.

Also has anyone visited a dentist in this period?? I have been having bleeding gums sometimes while brushing and now have a toothache...

Has anyone registered for any childbirth classes ?? or plan to??

Take care everyone...
poochy

hi poochy!!
im from the nov board. wow!! i recently got all three done!!
i got my AFP test done last week. its necessary. and it causes no harm to the baby so even if there if a false positive, u can always get it checked by u/s or amnio. but amnio is invasive. its good to get afp done as close as possible to the 16th week bcoz if there is an indication of abnormality, parents have a choice to get amnio done if they want to which can be done only till 18 weeks. my results came out normal but even if they werent we would never have done amnio.
books say everyone should visit a dentist at least once during preg. good oral hygiene can prevent premature births. i had bad nausea during the first trimester so i visited recently. u need to tell them that ur preg so that they dont take x-ray. i got my teeth cleaned and a cavity filling was found to be broken but filling cannot be done without anaesthesia so i still need to ask my OB if its ok to get it done. in any case, cleaning is definitely ok.
i registered for 5 child birth classes. i had to do it so soon bcoz my hospital carries classes for twins very occasionally and they get filled up soon. and i dont want to do any classes during the third trimester boz there is a possibility of bed rest at that time. even my doc had told me to get it done as soon as possible. u can get them cancelled anytime later, but if they get filled up, u wont get any.
hope this helped.
love,
pari.

Hello Poochy,

what is AFP testing? My gynec didn't discuss about this with me last time when I met her. I am now 15weeks. I have my next appointment in july when I will be 18weeks. Is it an important test? Do I need to ask my gynec about this?

Regards,
blessed_mom

This is a triple screening test done to see if the baby has any nueral, spinal or down syndrome effects, if you google for triple screening test , you will find all the info you need ..

u know .. i am not sure whether it needs to be done at all and not sure if i took the right decison by taking it ..

they say that it has false positive of abt 5% , and thinking abt it , eben if the baby has aproblem , it is ours and i cannot dream of not ahving it just bcoz it has problems ...

anyway, you can ask your gyn and if you want you can do it in your next visit in july, it si generally doen b/w 16-18 weeks ....

otherwise, how are things with you , are you enjoying your summer break ?? :)

i have two more weeks of classes and a couple of exams in july 1st week after which i would graduate :) ...

ok..take care,
-P

Yes i have one scheduled in about 3 weeks.
Hope everything turns on well.

About tooth decay do floss and clean your teeth everyday. Tooth problems are very high in pregnancy and care should be taken to keep the gums bacteria free because it goes in your stomach.

What are the books that you are reading? Let me know so that i can pick them at my library too.

I havent registered for classes yet. Am still deciding between hospitals. One of the hospital tour is scheduled next week and then i might decide on the class then on
