Hair Care:hair

My daughter is 10 years old. One day I noticed her eyebrows were scanty (gaps in between) and wondered what was happening. I thought its a harmonal change. But my younger daughter told me that she had seen her sister pulling out her hair with her fingers. I explained her not to do this. She stopped and after sometime I saw she was loosing hair. On asking and coaxing she agreed that she was now pulling out her hair. She now has a reciding hairline. Unknowingly as she' s studying, reading or just sitting her fingers goes to head and she just pulls off a hair and then she stares at the roots. I' ve explained to her what harm she is doing to her hair and she will be bald if she continues. I showed her, her scalp in the mirror how she has lost her hair. But she says Mama I dont know why I am doing this or how it happens. This has been happening for the past three months. She is a very normal, intelligent child. Please HELP.

Dear Smita

Its trichotillomania and its a psychological problem. Some children even eat those hairs which creates severe stomach disorders. I suggest you should take a support of a psychiatrist. What Sandhya has stated is true, do not blame or traumatise the child as it will have extreme negative impact on your daughter. Keep a watch on her and make her busy so that she concentrates on something else and is busy always. Please note that most of them do not get back the lost hair and as she grows the bald patches will affect her pshycologically and her self esteem and self confidence would become low.

Please ladies, if you do not know about the problem then please don' t suggest anything as drastic as shaving head etc..Pulling hair is called Trichotillomania and it usually stars in and around puberty and lasts for a lifetime. It is usually genetic, meaning someone in your or your husbands family must have had it earlier. There are thousands of books on this issue and please search Yahoo for more answers. Do not try to shave your daughters head or anything. Think logically and sensibly as to what would really help your daughter. It is not as if she wants to do this to herself. Don' t blame her or stigmatize her.

My cousine had similar tendency when he was of the same age. But eventually he lost that habit. Hope your daughter also will give up on this habit as she grows old. So dont worry. This may be an indication to some deficiency in her body. Like we know of children who suffer calcium deficiency tend to eat chalk. To start with, consult a good physician and take his/her advice.

Hello everyone,
I have medium volume hair but my hair type is very thin and silky. Due to which my hair doesn't hold curls for long hours. I have heard that texturizing spray helps to solve the above problem. Could someone please suggest the good texturizing spray for thin hair?... - Amulya Peru [View Message]
