Normal Delivery:Episiotemy

Hi All,

I have read in many parenting magazines that episiotemy (a surgical cut doctors give in the perennium area to ease normal delivery) is not mandatory and given only if needed. I am in pune now and attending Antenatal classes in a reputed hospitals where our teacher said here it' s a normal practice to cut in all normal deliveries.

Is it so every where.

Appreciate any more info on this.

Thanks
Aparna

Episiotomies are done in such cases where mother is not in a position to push...and ya it can be avoided if u start massage the perinium(the place between anal region and vagina)regularly from seventh month of pregnancy...
any ways its Episiotomy is not painful...even it is not cut the area becomes very sensitive...so its one and the same.....

Episiotomies should not be routine and the perinium should be messaged and allowed to stretch, Talk to your doctor about perineal massage, and usinf a warm water compress at the perinium at the time of delivery

Looks like Epistomy is done by default in most Indian metro cities. Heard that this used to be the case in US few years back & not any more.

Tell Me Your Story.
Dear All,

I'm Dr. Meghna Bharath. I'm a strong proponent of Natural Birthing.

In the run-up to becoming a Mom myself, I prepared for Natural birth and delivered naturally. Recently I encouraged and supported my younger sister and close friends deliver naturally as well [through remote advice, since we were across a 10-hour timezone :)].
