Due Date Club December 2006:Banana

Hi All,

I am 10wks pregnant and I am nearly taking all foods. Yesterday one of my cousin who has a 1yr old told me not to have bananas. Infact she did not have them throughout her pregnancy. I was surprised as first time I heard that bananas (ripe) should be avoided. Actually I like bananas and I am having one daily.

Did any of u hear such a thing? Just curious.

Bye,
Leo

Dear All,

Hope all of u are dooing fine. Thanks for all the inputs. I did ask my cousin and she said her MIL told her and so she followed. May be coz of constipation or iron content or some even believe it produces heat in the body. Anyway now I believe any food taken in moderation is ok. The body is the best judge when it comes to food. Will even ask my doc casually at my NDA, but I am sure she will say bananas are good.

Cheers,
Leo

Banana is used to control loose motions to get thick consistency of stool due to iron content in it. This also means people suffering from hard stool may want to avoid banana, though banana let the stool pass easily still constipated patients might not find it useful.

IP is good source of myths and wrong beliefs. Banana is avoided during cold becuase it supposed to be cold fruit but Leo you not only brought up avoiding banana during pregnancy, which was myth but another outbursting surprise that it may lead to head producting in body. Please don't listen and read anything. Read some books on your own or authentic sites not anything you find on internet or anything told by friends and family, there has to be a reason.

You know, in my case, i started hating the smell of bananba when i was around 7-8 weeks ...!!

When i told my MIL that , she said it is good because bananba can cause constipation, specially in the first trimester when the levels of progesterone leads to sluggish digestive system ...

even i was suprised because generally they say banana helps to reduce constipation ...

Anyway , the bottom line is, it is not harmful or anything ..but if you have constipation ,just ask your doc or elders ...

take care,
-P

Hi Leo,

I too have never heard that banana should be avoided during pregnancy, as i eat atleast 1-2 bananas daily. I looked up for some information in the websites about bananas during pregnancy n found that they are gud source of folic acid. U may also have a look at these links they are pretty informative. Still u can ask ur cousin why she said not to have banana during pregnancy.

hello Leo,

even i never heard that one should avoid banana. I am sure it is a false concept as i have my cousins who ate lots of them and had smooth pregnancies and delivered healthy babies.

I am 11.5 weeks and having them almost daily.

Regards,
blessed_mom

Hai,
Have not heard abt such a thing and i keep eating bananas. Did u ask ur cousin y we r not supposed to have bananas? I usually thought bananas are good when u have constipation but then after reading posts here in IP I knew that bananas shud be avoided if u r suffering from constipation coz of its iron content. Maybe ur cousin told u because of that. Anyway ask her y and tell us.

Bye
Rhea
