Due Date Club January 2005:Restless and sleepless

Hi folks,

Things were looking fine for a while...Santhosh actually at one point managed to sleep nearly 6 hrs straight...now again it is back to 2 hrs, and the worst part is that he starts crying after drinking milk for a couple of mins...it gets so frustrating at night :( then got to walk around etc and then he sleeps but is totally restless when he sleeps...milk consumption has also reduced...when he is not interested in drinking and I try to feed him he makes a face like he has tasted neem oil or something. Previously i used to be able to pacify him most time by letting him suck, but now he is outgrowing that tactic :(
One thing that I am noticing and am concerned is that he is constantly scratching the back of his head, between his ears, when he is restless, or I don't know if he is restless due to some irritation there...took him to the ped last week to check for ear infection, but he didn't have any...I feel sad and frustrated to see him scratch himself and get so restless. Can anyone throw some light on what could be the reason.
Thankfully he is sleeping right now for me to post this message freely. Got some cleaning work too before he wakes up. Daddy dear also has gotten sick so don't want to trouble him too much.
ok girls any suggestions welcome on his sudden behaviour change, and about his scratching.

Tweety,
What you are talking about here is exactly what Vrisa did last night. Since the time she was about 7 weeks old, she would sleep a good 6-7 hour stretch the first part of her night and wake once to feed and sleep another 3-4 hours. Last night she woke up ever 3-4 hours and I have noticed that during her feed right after she wakes from her nap during the day, she only sucks off the breat for 4-6 min and then starts looking around and getting distracted. Also, she does the same with her ear and hair around the ears but I have noticed that she does that when she's really tired. That's my cue to feed her and put her down for a nap or if she fights the nap, I take her for a walk and that seems to help. It must be their growth and more awareness that is causing this. Don't worry. I took on the philosophy that if I go with her flow, both Vrisa and I are much happier. I don't plan anything ahead of time and do things as I get the opportunities. This shall pass soon and that to me is the light at the end of the tunnel. Lots of love to you and Yash.

Hi Tweetie,
Not sure about the crying after drinking milk, but Yash too was soooooo restless while sleeping that I was getting more and more frustrated thinking what might be wrong. He rubs his nose so much that I feel if theres smth wrong there.
My mom suggested swaddling him lightly during night time, and he is sleeping a little better now. I dont know if its bcoz of the swaddling, or smth I dont know changed !!
I am not kidding but I wld be awake practically whole night just looking at him wiggling, moving, rubbing his nose, moving his head....
Yash still does'nt sleep thru the night, just 1 stertch of 3 hrs, then wakes up every 1 1/2 hrs.
So, now your post makes me think , is it just a phase or what??
Chalo gotta go.....
Love to Santosh

take care,
J

Forgot to add that, I wld put Yash for a nap during daytime in the Cradle-Swing, I wld put him in it after he was asleep.
I thought maybe he was getting used to it, so stopped using it at around the same time that I started to swaddle him at night....
Now , use the cradle-swing only for some time.

Rgds,
J

Hi,

After reading your post I felt my case similar to yours. My baby, Hiya also scratches area around her ear and back of head. Thou it is not constantly. I guess it is because of their growing hair on the ears, which probably irritates them, and they try to aim on the point bt sometimes it goes back of their head too. I put her hair at the back of her ear that are merely three or four strands :) It is my imagination I am not too sure. But since u have got it checked so I dont think there should be any cause of worry.

Yeah for drinking milk Hiya also seems to be very distracted. Sometimes I feel she doesnt even suck that good as she used to. Probably that is coz of distraction. Since they are growing now they get distracted easily hence consume less milk hence sleep less too. Mine keeps sucking her fingers during night too, which makes me feel so uncomfortable thinking she might be hungry so I get her up and try to feed. Sometimes she is interested for few moments sometimes not. I guess we will have to live with these things for a while till they are stabilized on proper solids and that is if they take that also :)

I hope this helps.
