Learning:How to get your child reading?

Name: Yogita

My 7 year old doesn' t like reading story books? How do I inculcate this so very important habit in her.
People say start early - since I might have already missed the bandwagon there - what do I do now?

Hi Yogita, try to show him videos and tutorials which will bring in a interest in your kid to read. Then slowly you can buy small books which he can read easily as the english in these books are simple.

If you want your daughter to start reading then search for interesting books and then start reading them with her. Give her company when she reads. This way maybe she might start reading books and find them interesting and get in that habit.

Try this idea. Make her watch a movie which is based on a book. A animated or some movie for the kids and if she likes it tell her that there are much more in the book than it is in the movie. See if this lil trick works on her.

Start building her habit of reading by bringing interesting story books for her. Kids love books which have good pictures in them. Start developing her habit bu picture story books and then to different types of books and she will surely like them all.

Buy her interesting books with lots of pictures and build the habit of reading in her. This is how you start a habit. With time buy books with more of the reading material. This is how the habit will build up.

It is never to late to start. Now that you have realized your mistake instead of wasting time on thinking what to do read her stories for a few days and when she gets interested tell her to read further in that way she will.

Hi Yogita,
try to solve this problem by give and take policy it will work and later try to make less of giving the things which ever she asks other wise you will make her learn a new habit again.I wish your desire will fulfill also.

Hi Yogita,
According to my concern we must not keep any pressure on the kids because they need to travel nearly about 15 years with study.People will give suggestions because they are free of cost.Do not get tensed for every issue.

Hello Yogita,
Your kid is just seven years old.At this age kids will not be so stable they want to play watch television etc.So you need to inculcate an interest in them to read books and make them to read books slowly and it will become as habit later.

Hello Yogita,
It is very hard to make children to learn because i know i have faced the same problem.Because i have tried different methods to make them learn it is highly impossible to divert their mind from play to study.

Hello Yogita,
So making kids to read an difficult task because children at this stage will be loving to play, watch different channels.Diverting them from doing such activities to study will be quite difficult. So you just make them to read for 30 minutes and then increase time gradually.

Hi Yogita,
Do not force the child to read, inculcate an interest of listening stories and then made them read few words daily and increase the word count and explain the meaning of the words so that they will read by themselves.

make her a member of some club or you start a meetings with her friends who like to read books and arrange get together with them at your place so it will encourage her to start reading when she realize that she doesn't know any of the things which her friends knows. its a psychology of human being that he doesn't want to be alone.

Hey hi! I think you should get her into a book club. My child was way reluctant to read and her teacher @ Orchids got her into the book club at school. She slowly began to read as her friends were in it and she felt compelled to read. No, she has the habit of reading books daily and I am a happy parent!

First relax! Dont pressure her into anything. If she starts liking story books or novels, she will read them automiatically. Dont pressure the child into anything she doesnt want to do.

Hi,

Don' t try to force it. You can start it by trying this:
Find out what you child is already interested in and get books on those subjects, like airplanes or flowers or dinosaurs. Just give her the books on the subjects of her interest, but don' t insist that she read. Initially she may only look at the pictures but at some point hopefully she will get curious and start reading. If she shows interest in reading something, as long as it is age appropriate, do not judge her or stop her or ridicule her, no matter how silly or useless the book seems to you. Once she gets into a reading habit then you can expose her to a variety of books. Show interest if she wants to tell you about something she read. Also lead by example and read a lot in front of her.

I agree with Unnati. Dont force things upo children. You should lead by example and try to gently introduce her to the habit. My kid refused to read for a long while and I had to be patient with her. However, today she is a member of the reading club at school and has become a voracious reader! I guess with the right kind of environment, your kid will start reading.
