Hi Everyone

My sister who is also pregnant with her first child and is due in March next year has been told by her doctor in India that her little one may have Rubella. I am so worried for her i hope it all gets better. If anyone knows more about this please advise me of the same as i have no idea about this infection.

Many thanks

Hi Praneet,

I totally understand your concern.
But I dont understand, what the doctor means when she says that the BABY may have rubella. The mother can catch rubella & pass on the consequences to the unborn child. But determining that the baby may have it at birth is kinda new to me.
However, its important that your sister should know all about it. I can share with you whatever information i have about Rubella, also known as German Measles.

This is a mild but very infectious disease that lasts only a few days. It is caused by a virus and may cause a slight rash or fever, sometimes accompanied by swollen glands and aching joints.
Rubella has grave consequences for the unborn child. If the mother suffers from it in the first 3 months of pregnancy, it may cause deafness, blindness or any other type of abnormality. This virus may also cause a miscarriage, low birth-weight baby or stillbirth. if u catch rubella in the first 3 months of pregnancy, ur doc will advise a medical termination of pregnancy.
Girls are normally immunized against rubella around 10-14yrs of age.
If u r not sure whether u have had rubella, a blood test for rubella antibodies will make it clear. if u have never had it before, u can be immunized after the baby is born to avoid any worry in the future.

U can also look up the net for more information.

Wish you sister Luck from me!

Luv,
Manvi

Thank you for your suggestion. My sister just got her results yesterday and they said that the IGG was higher because she has had vaccination for it when she was young so all is well now. She and the baby are safe.

Regards
