Dear Forum,

my husband is Indian and I am German and we have a son of 3 months. My husbands parents recently mentioned a celebration in which the child eats its first solid food. They said it is important to them, that we celebrate this, even though we currently live in Germany.

Now i would like to organize a really nice celebration. Can you tell me more about the ceremony? Who do i invite? What is the custom? And what is the festivity called?

Thank you in advance
MOna

Hi mona,
Its very nice that you respct your in law' s tradition and their feeling. First you have to select a auspious day like coming 14th April is a good day(Whatever religious your hubby belongs) . on that day , you can call your freiends and family members and cook something sweet(you can make kheer, milk + rice+ sugar). firstly take it i a silver bowl and ask some one elder to lick it to your child with silver spoon.
lots of blessing for your baby

In India, we have many religions and each one as a unique way of celebrating. Ofcourse one thing common in every religion is worshipping god when u celebrate, But can u let us know ur husband religion/mother tongue so that we can help you with the appropriate procedure ?

Hi! Thank you! My husband is a Hindu from Rewa. I also found out, that the ceremony is called Annaprasana. We will hold it in May, but we can´ t find a priest to do the ceremony for us here. Do you think it would be possible to do it ourselves?

What would we have to do apart from feeding him? ANd what food should we offer to the guests?

Thank you
Mona

Hi Ramona,
It is really nice to know that you want to follow indian traditions. I am a south indian and usually we all go and give the baby' s first solid food in a temple called guruvayoor in kerala.
I could not do that for my son so we gave him his solid food in home on an auspicious day. YOu can do traditional food at home and give him on a auspicious day. If you want you can invite guests also. all the best
