Due Date Club April 2004:Induction

Hi,

Just a quick question: I just read the post by Tina & Alpana about their doc refering them to induce labor if they cross their Edd. When I checked abt this with my CB class tutor what she told me is that if there is no fetal distress there is no harm in waiting atleast for a week as the due date calculation is an estimate and mother nature knows well when the baby is ready to arrive in this world. She also said that its the tendency of the doc here in US to recommend an induction as soon as we cross the date. Did any of you talked with your doc about what their policy is in such situations? Is this the same way with the Gynec's in India also???

Take care

my friend delivered with my same doctor about 4 months back. and my doctor didnt induce her till 2 weeks after due date when she still didnt get contractions. so I guess its a case be case basis, but i will check with my doc as well.

i also thought the general consensus was that 1st babies are ususally a little late so I think it seems natural to wait a week atleast before induction to me.

Mansi Hi,

When one surpass EDD it's naturally depends on size of the baby, amniotic fluid quantity. Usually postdate babies are likely to be bigger than usual weight, posing difficult labor. In case baby has first bowlmovement in the womb then it may swallow myconeum and can lead to pneumonia (one of the neonatal type of pneumonia).

I fully agree with your coach, Drs. would want to induce and there is nothing wrong.

Yet some Drs. can prefer to wait by monitoring close as much as they can.

It's a choice usually made by Dr. unless you discuss with them about their pros and conseqs.

Yes post date babies have to be tested as often as possible for any additional stress, measuring heartbeats and test if baby responds to sound (moves when noise is high).

If you are comfortable with your Dr. talk to her/him and have this one sorted out.

Good luck for your labor.
Archie

Hi Mansi,
Even I heard it is good to wait at least a week unless and utill baby is not in stess, not big and have sufficient fluid. I saw many shows on discovery health. In that many midwife prefer to wait in US.
I will talk with my doc about that.
Maitrali.
