Health Concerns:Problems from 23rd week

HI,

Currently my wife is in her 27th week, the problems began almost 4 weeks back, she was due to come home after visiting her parents for a couple of months. She had asked me to book a scan for her return, i had an uneasy feeling regarding her flying back home without doing the scan, so I insisted she done the scan in Bombay, so she went ahead and done the scan there.

Now everything was going well up until this point, the scan was going well and the baby' s devolopment was ' perfect' according to the Dr, as the scan progressed he moved down to view the cervix, now she had dilated to 5 cm' s, which caused much concern, he immediatly called the Gynac who insisted my wife to go to the hospital without delay. Upon examination, he decided that he will need to perform a minor surgery to tie up the cervix the next morning (which was a Thursday) and she would be allowed back home on the Sunday, but not allowed to travel and the baby would have to be born in Bombay. So after the surgery the Dr had reported to us that the operation was much more complicated than expected, the membranes were already starting to hang out of the cervix, he was contemplating aborting during the op, but managed to get them back inside using a technique he had pioneered himself, so then he proceeded to sutre the cervix and closed them up. Due to the complications he advised that she will not be leaving the hospital for some time atleast 6 weeks, possibly until after delivery and she will be confined to 100 bedrest.

Anyway the next scan, which was just under 2 weeks back revealed good results, baby having the time of his/her life and the dilation is around 2cm or less, can' t remember excactly, the dr had said he may let her home after 3 weeks, this had elevated my wife' s mood and gave her something to look forward to.

Then, one week back she woke up in the morning, there was a fair amount of blood on the bed (dark colour) so this was a cause of concern, she was kept under close observation, but the dr wasn' t too concerned, then the next morning much more blood, this continued through out the day, also contractions had started, she was put on a drip to stop the contractions and kept under hourly obervatiuon, the baby has also become very active over the past ten days and is kicking alot, he/she also responds to my voice over the telephone, as i am unable to visit again for a couple of weeks. So the contractions had stopped by Saturday and the bleeding has all but stopped, I guess this is just residue trying to find it' s way out, as the foot end of the bed is raised to defy it' s very difficult.

So with all this, the chances of my wife going home before delivery are very slim, although I really hope it' s possible, for her own sanity.

Today she will be administered with a Betnesol injection and one more tomorrow, now whilst I understand the purpose of this and I expect a premature delivery. What I want to know is that with this injections is the Dr expecting to deliver in the next week or two?

Getting steroid injections into the mother at least 24 hours prior to a premature birth improves the baby' s ability to breathe, reducing ventilation time and possibly reducing NICU time.
Which doctor is your wife going to?
