Dear Moms/Dads,

Can someone tell me when does a baby start
uttering words? I am looking at a range
(in months).

Finally, what can we do as parents to get baby
interested in uttering words?

So far ours just utters \" dildildildil...\" when
the baby is happy running around!
BTW its just ~ a yr.

Please advise!! Thanks a mil again!

all babies different babies and on cannot say for sure when a baby should achieve a particular milestone, even though the apprx age range is specified. I dont think you suspect any speech issues with ur kid, u r just awaiting her to speak. Let her take her own time. Some babies start speaking words at 8m, others at 12, like that. My 12m old baby also does dildildil, but she also saus mumma papa dada didi kaka like that. I think ur baby will also start speaking words in a couple of months. Some ppl believe girls approach milestones faster than boys, i dont know how true is that.

What i did to encourage my baby is this. I caught up the letters that she can speak. Some can speak ma some speak pa but not ma, some can speak ka but not da, like that. Thankfully my baby started with ma and i could soon hear that magical word mumma, then she cd speak da. So i knew she cant speak ka. Hence if she cd speak ma pa da, i taught her forms of those. Like mummy, papa, dada dadi didi (she has a didi 5 yr old) then dede. She is speaking these well.

so give time to ur baby and u can try encouraging like that. BTW what is thanks-a-mil?

game, my doctor said that if your blabber or answer your child in junk language, your child will never learn the correct usage of word but will be late in speaking.

i heard from him that 18months and onwards is the right age when most kids start to pick up words directly from parents, even if they have not started speaking ma,da etc.
for my son, it worked that way while my daughter started blabbering in junk language from 13months and by 15months, she spoke and meant the real words.

some more things i do is i speak to the baby a lot. At times i speak in our normal language, slow and loving, so that she understands it. I also teach her what i mean to say. For example - papa ko dedo. Or didi ko dedo. Then, my baby also speaks in the baby laguage (babbles). You might hv heard this - they just utter any letters and go on and on as if they are speaking something. So i too reply to her in that junk language, in a tone as if i am replying to her. She understands that and starts babbling more.

dont get afraid and dont loose hopes, your son is absolutely fine, and give him the proper tuition and avoid more playing periods of his, and you should teach him at home when you will get free time.... - praglabh [View Message]
