Due Date Club September 2007:i had my nuchal sonography!!!

hii!!
just wanted to share ...
i had my nuchal test.. which was my ultrasound at the end of the first trimester ( i am 12 wks and 5 days today) .. to chk for down' s syndrome.. today..
it went great... and we actually saw a little baby... complete with hands and legs.. and a perfectly formed spinal cord... and a nose even...
and he was jumping quite a bit... doing flips and all...
we were sooooo thrilled... dear hubby even started laughing looking at him jumping... looks like i have a little monkey!!!
the doctor said it' s quite normal for babies to move so much at this time..

rest.. all measurements looked fine.. and the good sonologist also explained every bit.. showed me every angle of my monkey.. from head to rump :-) and i got two pics for my baby album :-)
am very excited... just wanted to share it with all of you..
thanks for listening!!
love
ira

Hi Ira,

I would like to share my feelings with u all. I read your msg in the website. Actually i felt very happy on knowing how the baby' s behave inside us in the 12th week. I have just completed my 12th week and in to my 13th week now currently. I took a sonography in my 9th week. Which showed me a small bean like structure with a pimple like hands and legs. You know the legs and hands have jsut started to grow at that time. The most funny thing was that even with that small pimple like legs and hands my baby was making movements and created a great happiness in my husband' s face. This was the moment I felt my baby really really great. You know that was the first movement that i felt that a baby is really growing inside me.

It was really great.

My due date is on September 10th, 2007.

Be in touch.

I would like to hear more from you all.

Bye,

Poornima.

hello ira,
Thanks for sharing the 12th week ultrasound. As Mine is going to be only after 16th week,I' m happy to know that on 12th week, babies hands ,legs n spinal cord are perfectly formed..
Surely ur baby is gona be a football player. If he/she is active now so u can imagine how he/she is gona be after 6 weeks!kool...n touchwood..
I have some doubts, cud u please clear them?I guess in India, they dont check for down' s syndrome,is it that we shd specifically ask them?Did they write in ur ultrasound report abt the baby' s measurement?
anyways thanks for sharing ur experince.

hi meghnah!
yes... in india they do not check for down´ s syndrome.. i think... here also.. earlier they used to check for down´ s only if you were above 35 years of age... but i think my doctor said that recently more and more younger women are delivering babies with downs... hence they´ re testing everyone...
there is a veryyy slim chance of having down´ s syndrome... so unless you have someone in the family with down´ s.. or some such history... you do not need a test for down´ s syndrome.... and anyway.. when you have your regular sonography with a sonologist.. if there is any malformation or anything.. the sonologist will know immediately and ask you to get more tests done... so you don´ t need to worry.

hmm... the system here is a bit weird.... they don´ t hand the sonography report over to the patient.. the lab will directly send the report to my doctor.. who will inform me only if something is wrong... else i don´ t get to seee the report... which is strange for us indians.. who are used to knowing every bit of our reports..
believe me... my mom´ s a gynac.. and she asks me specific values for all tests.. and i feel like a fool! because i don´ t know :-)

and don´ t bother about all these tests... indian sonologists are much more experienced and better than anywhere else.. i am sure of that.. and if you ask enough questions.. i am sure your sonologist will explain very bit to you... so enjoy the little miracle..
and do tell us when you get your sonography done!
love
ira

Hi Ramya!
basically it was judt an abdominal sonography. but i read this pamphlet at the sonologist.. which said.. that they actually measure the width if the baby´ s neck, and the amount of fluid behind the head.. and check for abnormalities... though which they can detect down´ s syndrome... and also any other abnormalities if present.
the doctor actually measured everything.. the length of the baby, his head diameter, neck, etc...

also they took some blood sample from me... through which they will check for any chromosomal discrepancy..

it´ s nothing to worry about.. because down´ s syndrome is many times genetic... also according to the same pamphlet 1 in 680 babies is born with down´ s syndrome.
and according to my mom..(who´ s a gynaec) there are very few such cases among indians! so it´ s just routine...

hmm.. the baby was jumping.. but i can´ t feel a thing ... that´ s because it´ s very small... it must be around 2 to 3 inches long... and there´ s a lot of fluid in the uterus... so i´ ll feel the movements only when it grows a bit... until then.. he can do all his exercises without disturbing me...
know what.. ever since we came back... my husband has been copying the hand movements my baby was making... actually looked like it was dancing :-))it definitely makes it more real ... to see ur baby moving like that...
you´ ll know when you see yours.... it´ s only 4 weeks away.... the way time´ s been passing the last 3 months.... it´ ll be soon enough :-)
until then u can ask me all ur doubts :-)
lot´ s of love
ira
