Due Date Club January 2007:For Archie

Hi Archie,

I have a question for you, may be a silly question. I am in my 12th week now in US. I had a miscarriage in 11 th week last year. I had to change my doctor here as we changed our place .

My mother told me that she had around 20 days of bleeding when I was in her womb in first trimester. At that time her doctor gave \";some\"; medicine to prevent bleeding. This is my cause of concern. I read in a book that that medication given 1978+ was DES. That may weaken baby's reporductive organs. This always worried me a lot. As i had miscarraige last time, I feel scared if I think of it.
I have told my doctor about my history, but they r treating this pregnancy as a normal one. Till now they have not done any test except blood work, even no progestrone test.

I want to know that is there any specific test available ... to diagnose the problem.

Whenever I hav pain in my lower left I feel very scared. I have an doctors appointment next week.

Please clarfiy my doubts...

Pinki,
Let me tell you do not worry on reproductive function and pregnancy loss, these are two points you can't really combine always.

Lets take it with history: your mother had bleeding while carrying you, could have been low progestrone levels or low lying placenta and both causes are very normal in first trimester. Since she carried you throughout the pregnancy and had no issues after three weeks of bleeding DES treatment should not have affected your life activities, besides it was in first trimester when developmental array is formed. since you have been experienced normal gynecological function (I take it that you did not issues with periods before and after marriage and also during last two conceptions) your reproductive activity has been as healthy as a baby born from touchwood pregnancy. You did ovulate naturally I suppose and that's good point for you to put behind history even before you were born:-)

your last miscarriage could have been due to many reasons, abnormal developmental array, a mismatch chromosome that led to early development failure and or some genetic or neural disfunction. We can't really talk much on that pregnancy now without any data offered from that loss.

present pregnancy has been a bliss for you for last 12 weeks, the week you lost previous pregnancy has surpased and emotionally you should be more stronger. Often I have seen girls on IP carrying pregnancy after loss are overly worried until they cross the gestation where they had experienced loss. I think that's normal but you should be in good shape since you are over that.

I don't think you were not tested for progesterone. It's one of the first blood test your Dr. must have done along with hCG levels. since they might have been above 16 your Dr. choose not to provide you with supplemental progesterone. I would suggest to weight caution by keeping fully hydrated (drink about 8-10 glasses of fluids each day) and also do not do heavy duty work and avoid stressful situation, take maximum bed rest for next two weeks and we can see how you do thereafter.

your pain in lower abdomen on the left side is from Round ligament and will be there either on left side, right side, both at the same time, could grow in groin or top of vagina and in second trimester it might be in the middle of uterus and is absolutely normal. This is because your uterus is expanding to make more space for growing life in it and it's from muscle pull and loose ligaments. They are more intense for subsequent pregnancies, since you alreday had a pregnancy for 11 weeks you might feel them earlier than other primaparous member from this board.

I hope you have been educated with what's going on and will find some relief.

Archie
