Due Date Club July 2008:Low progesterone !!!

Hi gals,

Is anyone sailing in the same boat as me. My progesterone levels came a little low than normal. I' m in my 8th week now and doctor has given me ' Prometruim' an progesterone supplement to be taken vaginally. I take one tab every night before I go to sleep, so that it does not get messy.

Is low progesterone a very risky for the baby' s growth or anything? What are the effects of the low progesterone on overall pregnancy? All my other sono' s and everything is good, baby' s heartbeat is good and baby is also growing as it should. What are ur opinions and experiences with women with low Proges.

Thanks
Madhu

hi lalitha

great news!! congrats! i know how exciting it is to hear & see the baby' s heartbeat.. :) :)

i went thru exactly the same thing as u did.. i had spotting at 4wks5days.. i went in for my scan then and everything was ok.. then 6wks5days the heartbeat was detected.. all thru this time i only went in for hcg level checks and no progesterone checks.. so i really don' t know what my level is.. my doc gave me Susten 200 bcoz of my spotting..

my doctor has not yet asked me to do any progesterone checks

Hi gals,

I was tested for progesterone level through a simple blood test. It was done in the 6th week. But I had no bleeding or any such thing, this is one of the routine tests the doctors do here after the pregnancy is confirmed. It is done to all pregnant women.

I had my first sono done in the 6th week and everything was fine, baby´ s heartbeat was perfect, so I guess this test is done to all the women. I was only told that my progesterone level is a little low, since the range is so wide doctor that that its better to take the tabs, I take 200mg tab locally every night before going to bed.

I hope I have answered ur query. I guess that in case of slight bleeding the doctors might be prescribing a progesterone supplement without a blood test.

Thanks for ur prompt replies girls.

hi madhu

i am taking 2 progesterone supplements daily vaginally.. i was on 3 a day till my scan which was absolutely fine..i have not checked my levels but there has been no indication of any change...

from what i understand is that extremely low levels of progesterone leads to miscarriage.. progesterone is needed to maintain the pregnancy in its early stages.. that is why most doctors prescribe supplements.. ur doctor should increase ur dosage if there is indication of low levels.. speak to her asap

Hi Madhu, Riya

I am curious- how did you know that u had low progestrone? I want to know because I wasnt really tested for that after I conceived. (I was given progestrone anyway because I was spotting a little)
All I have had to do till date is 2 scans - one when I discovered my pregnancy - just about 4.5 weeks, and one today at 6.5 weeks (by the way, saw the heartbeat today!)
No other tests. Can you share with me what other tests (blood?) have been done for you guys?
