Due Date Club February 2008:Keep the iron and calcium apart...

Girls...Don' t know if this is unsolicited advice but just wanted to share a fact with you...

Iron and Calcium hinder each others absorption so try and keep them apart when you pop your multivitamins. Eat one in the morning and the other at night.

Also iron is not absorbed too well in the system if taken with calcium rich food like dairy products so try and keep that in mind too.

Hi Kalpana,

Dont skip milk... Milk is very important during our pregnancy... Take Calcium after lunch and Iron tablet after dinner.... try and dont eat curd or any dairy products during dinner... You can have milk early morning and early evening... but dont skip milk...

Do you know about the time taken to absorb Iron by the system. I am confused about the way to space out my milk intake, calcium tab intake.

Mostly these days, I am skipping milk just to make sure my iron is getting absorbed.

Here in US they give one multivitamin tablet a day for pregnancy. I guess it has both Iron and Calcium. Don' t know whatz getting absorbed inside our bodies and what is going waste... Hope it works...

Hi Ck

I too was taking a single tab prenatal everyday till my doc told me how its more difficult to digest and about the iron-calcium issue. So she has put me on something called Preg-vit which is a set of 2 tablets, quite appropriately one pink and one blue (not that it matters except it often makes me smile) with the calcium and iron separated.
Also I know from my friends in India that most of them don´ t take one-a-day tabs so thought this tip might help them...
