My baby is 6.5 mo. old and has a strong liking to keep all her fingers into mouth and start sucking biting etc. We try so hard to take it off but in a sec. she puts it back. We tried putting mittens on, no use. She sometimes cries if we pull the hand off. I read somewhere that sucking while eating may improve the swallowing for solids. Should I worry about this sucking habit? if yes , is there anything I can do about it? Please advise. She has no teeth btw but her gums seem to be strong with a bite.

Hetal replied. 1. make sure he wears mitten.
2. like others said, it might indicate hunger.
3. make sure your child is away from sep anxty,,some kids whn in anxty do that.
4. even though its quite normal but it better to let your child be away from this habit before he gets to an age when he gets teeth ! or else he might endup biting himself or in future others. give him toy to play and it will keep his hands busy !
5. her gums are preparing for teethng,,see if soothing gels helps,,ask your dr for one of those gum soothng gels if you are out of US, and if you are in US, try orajel ! works wonder,,whenver baby does that, just put the gel, and if its due to teethng,,the habit will stop eventually !
6. some babies tend to do that when they dont get enough attn,,even when your baby is lying and playng on his own among toys or just lying in rocker/cradle etc,,as soon as he does that,,try talking to him,,this will soothe him...if require,,,see if gvng massage soothes him or just put a gentle music and make his hands busy by givng him some little handy toy to play !
7. sucking thumb has nothing to do with skils that improve swallowing skills..it is not a proved theory,,but it does mean that if your child is 6.5months and still if he is just on liquid diet,,he needs to be startd on solid diet ! see if he is ready for ,,introduce solids and it should stop,,if thats the case !
crying when you pull of hand, indicates only one thing to me, either ready for solids and in order to supress hunger, he is doing that,,or his gums will soon show signs of teethng as mentioned by you that they are hard enough to take a bite !! just ready for solids and hard foods,,give him a piece of cool carrot to chew,,it will soothe him !,,
and right now he is having terrible itching,,the other fctrs are also possble however,...
see if helps somehow !
