Due Date Club October 2005:Archie ..breastfeeding problem

Archie i am facing new problem i.e breastfeedling. Yash has got used to the bottle and not feeding at the breast.

I had no milk till 3 days after his birth and had to use formula.I was not aware that using a bottle would create such a problem and frankly did not think i will have to use a formula.Since 3rd day i started pumping and now i am able to pump milk and feed him but with the bottle.Still i am not scheduled properly to pump and feed him and have to give formula when i do not have enough breastmilk pumped.
I try to latch him to the breast but he cries a lot.He just sucks few times and leaves.I was having no nipples to start..but now with pumping i see some nipples but he is not able to latch. He cries so much that after trying a while i just give him the bottle.I really want him to breastfeed but cannot see him crying and do dare to try.I will be going to a lactation consulatant tomm.Lets see.I had been to her when i was in the hospital ... she had mentioned that sucking action for the bottle and breast are different and that is very confusing for the baby.
right now i am worried...that it is too late for me to teach him to breatfeed. Please looking at the situation would tell me tips what i can try to get him breastfeed.rigth now he gets 3-4 times a day breastmilk and rest formula.
thanks...

Dear SK,
A little thing, you should not have kept him all on bottle in hospital because you may/may not have milk you should have taught him how to suckle on nipples. The hospital was best place as you would get better help of a nurse.
Babies born can be happy without milk for 36-48 hours and normally milk supply starts anywhere between 48-72 hours for late lactating mothers.

Now you should get your mothers help and make Yash latch on nipples, don't be upset if he is crying. It's natural, the more you get upset and give him bottle the more you are taking him away of breast. Unless he knows how to latch and more he latch more milk will be produced.

Pumping and formula combination is good idea for feeding no trouble but you desire to nurse and therefore keep on your persistant.

A shield might help, that's what I can judge from your message.

it will be hard in the beginning but get better as you both get used to. I was upset for first nursing day.

I am sure you read in other boards about nipple confusion and indeed not a surprise to hear that baby get confused between bottle and breast.

let me know what happens with lactation specialist.

have you taken BalantKada, Dink ladoo, garlic and ajwain in the morning. try to include methi seeds, garlic in seasoning while make curries or vegetables.

Thanks archie.

Well great news is yash was latching since yest night.Yest night he had drank a little bit of milk before and was playing.I knew his must be still hungry. That time i was pumping also.So I thought lets give it a try...and with few tryshe started drinking.I did the same in the morning and he latched a little better. But he drinks very slow.He stops and drinks. It would take a lot of time if he has to the amount of milk he is drinking.Yest he was on breast was almost 45 min and later again he drank with bottle(breastmilk).Right now my milk is good and able to pump for him.
Would it be a bad idea to pump and give him milk and once a while give him breast.I will keep on trying breast until lacthing and drinking is proper and i have a great fealing that with few more tries we should be ok.

Yes my mom is giving me all the things you mentioned.

Thanks,
SK
