Due Date Club February 2006:Hi Archie-- Urgent
2006-02-10
Name: Radha

Hi,
I am Radha's husband. We are silent readers here from many days. My wife is due on Feb 22nd. She is now in India. She completed 38 weeks LMP on 8th Feb. When we have scan here in US at 21 weeks they told everything is fine. She had another scan today in India. What doctors are telling due to water went to head(I dont know whether I am writing correct term), head become larger and its not possible to give normal birth. If we want they can do C-Section tomorrow to deliver the baby and if necessary they will do surgery to head. Archie, can you tell us how it safe the baby in this situation? Can the baby be normal even after surgery? Please reply soon as we are worried and very tensed...

Thanks,
Mr & Mrs Radha

since you have had ultrasound in USA round 21 weeks all must be alright. I also imagine your wife must have had her AFP test ruling any concern.

The BPD does increase in many normal babies and most of them are normal.

I am not clear what do you mean by water going to head..... But increased BPD is not a surprise if this is little too large to push through pelvis better to do C-section. Because it will only get your wife exhausted and baby suffer a lot while stuck in pelvis where only an expert can save both lives. Since the situation is presented in concerning manner I have two suggestions:
1. Have a second opinion as soon as possible and get the term clear what exactly is happening.
2. If second opinion too suggest increased BPD (enlarged head) then without any further delay plan C-section.

In any event delivering baby is fine, it's 38 weeks and no concern on that part.

Let me know.
Archie

Subject:  Delivered through C-Section

My wife delivered the baby through C-Section on 11th Sat morning. What doctors are telling there is a fluid in the brain that is not being obsorbed by membranes(Condition called Hydrocephalus). They are suggesting to undergo surgery to place shunts in the brain to divert the fluid.Indian doctors are telling this condition was there from beginning, even at 21 week U/S taken in US but here doctors in USA did not inform about this.

Thanks,
Mr& Mrs Radha
