I was opposed to shaving my head before for fear of ridicule. I'm close to 40 years now and picked up the courage to overcome my fears. Simultaneously, the hair on my head too started irritating me and a deep desire developed in me to go bald.
So i took a spot decision to tonsure it. After some extensive research, i narrowed down on a small temple on the outskirts of Bangalore called Chikka Tirupati which is the place one goes if one is unable to go to the main Tirupati temple. There are not too many reviews on the net on this place but the ones which detailed the tonsure process were of good help. After developing an idea of what to do, i called up the temple office to make sure that they indeed tonsure and to inquire the best times. The lady who received my phone advised me to come on a weekday and bring fresh clothes. So i went on a wednesday accompanied by mother & wife who encouraged me all along to tonsure my head. We reached there at 5 pm, took the token and headed to the tonsure area. The barber asked me to wet my hair in warm water. Then he wet my hair with his water, bent my head and i felt a pleasing scrape. after a few scrapes, i head joyous words from my mother and wife that my scalp is seen. The barber continued to run the razor and the feeling was very good. I felt a smooth breeze of air cooling my head and my wife & mother said "now it's only a matter of a few more strokes, he is bald". Then the barber started scraping on my crown and after some more strokes i heard my mother say "Done! once the hair sticking around the head goes he will look very good". Just then the barber plucked off the line of hair around my forehead, dusted my head with his cloth and said "Done sir". I turned to see my mom and wife smiling. They said "Congratulations, you're looking superb". I touched my scalp and felt a hint of roughness and asked the barber if he should shave in the opposite direction too to make it very smooth. He said that it was part of the scalp and would injure me and this was smooth enough. My wife touched and confirmed that it was smooth enough. After a bath, i saw myself in the mirror and the part which had the hair before looked very smooth and shaved. So there i was - shaved clean and smooth.I enjoyed this experience throughly. I have decided against wearing a cap/hat and proudly display my head. I even allowed 2-3 young school kids - both boys and girls to touch and feel it and encouraged them too to shave their heads at least once a year.
