Due Date Club April 2004:Need advice - itch alot

Hi All,
Great discussion board u gals have out here.Have been reading through the same and got some great bits of advice from you all. Hope to be a regular part of the same.
I have a query too... I am now in my 30th week and have been experiencing alot of itching off late. It gets really extreme at times, especially at night. the itching starts from my soles and my palms and then spreads throughout the body. My doc says its bacuase of the sluggishness of the liver, which is not uncommon during pregnancy. She has also prescribed some med and has adviced me to drink lots of water and cut down on salt and fatty foods. Though this has helped a bit, but I am still highly uncomfortable at times due to the itching.Anyone esle experiencing anything suimilar? Any advice? Pls do let me know. Thanks in advance.

All the best to all the mommies to be
Abha

Hi All,
Thanks a tonne for all your advice.
You are right oil massages do help alot. Also, I have been told abt this homoepathic med that is to be mixed in oil and applied. I am going to try the same and shall tell u all if I find it effective. It should be absolutely safe as in this case you are just locally applying it and not eating or drinking any medicine.
Hope you all are doing well :)
Thanks once again.

Hi Abha

Well, even I had the problem. My dad (who practices Ayurveda back in India) suggested that instead of creams, I use oil on my skin. This is because all creams are basically emulsions of oil. Oil is more pure in its healing values and is better absorbed by the skin. I am currently using Avocado oil which I bought from a Natural Health food store. You could also try Mustard oil. Dad said that Mustard oil would be best, but becuase it has a faint odour some women do not like it.
Lightly massage the oil into your body immediately after a bath with warm water. That is when your skins absorbency is at it's best.
Hope this helps and you feel better soon.

i would suggest the same as mansi and naaz, apart from that DO NOT scratch with your nails try using your palm,, cos i believe scratching with nails leaves black marks on your skin which lasts even after pregnancy..
hope you are feeling better,, dont worry think positive that its only a few more weeks to go, and then you will feel every itch was worth the cute baby:-)

Abha,

Welcome to the grp. This is mansi & is in my 28th wk. As naaz mentioned itching is one among the various pregnancy discomforts & I too agree with putting creams soon after taking your bath. This will restrain the moisture in the body and will reduce dryness & itching due to the stretching of our skin.

Its also good to apply warm Olive oil on your skin before taking bath. Do it atleast once a week as this will also help preventing strech marks. If you are in US check for Palmer's lotion or cream for itchy skin. Its available in the babies-r-us stores.

Take care.

Hi Abha,
I am writing to u for the 1st time ,
Itching is normal in pregnancy ,it happens to me too.
Try taking a bath with luke worm water at night before going to sleep. Also apply a lotion on your body with slight massage after that would help you.
It has helped me. Although I used to
get mild itching.

Try this !!!!

Bye
Take cAre
Naaz
