hi all:

a quick question. did anyone made any serious changes in your diet during the third trimester as we tend to put weight more easily now? the only change I made is cutting down my serving of rice. Is there anything else we should be careful about to avoid quick weight gain?

Pls do share your thoughts!

Hi,

Thanks all of you. I am in my 28th week now and so far gained around 19 pounds. My doc said its better to stick to a weight gain of 25 to 35 pounds the most in your entire preg period as otherwise chance of running in to a C section rise a little higher.

As suma mentioned, yes I am trying to cut down my intake of ghee, meats other than chicken & fish and ofcourse ice creams and choclates too :-) I used to have rice for lunch and dinner but is now trying to have chappathi's with veg curries for dinner.

Anyway THANKS all of you for your suggestions & I promise I will be careful not to cut down too much on what I should be eating for the two of us :-)

Hi mansi am new here,am staying away from home in usa,and miss all the advise that we would have got if we were with the elders in the family. But i get some advise from friends and family. But it is better always to consult ur Dr before any change in diet.I think that u should not cut out rice completely ,just reduse the quantity. The most imp thing is reduse fat items and sweets ,like butter, gee, cheese and fried items.but i will recomend to drink whole milk as some amout of fat is good.as we want our baby to be at least 7 to 8 pounds.Yeah i have heard that if u eat eat mutton and red meat BP will increase and its true as my dad has BP and if he has mutton his BP increase. So it will be better if u stick to chicken and fish.U can increase a lot of fiber containing food to compensate the fat items u have taken previously.Am in my 35th week, and have gained 24 pounds. It good to maintain ur weight gain between 25 to 35 pounds. But if u feel like eating some thing don't stop becouse ur body will tell u what u want.bye

Hi Mansi,

I donnt know the exact resion why elders complain etc. By my knowlege they decrease our resistance power. Our body its self should capability to accept all vatamins from food.
U can try brown rice, I eat fulakas( chapati without oil). I add some raagi flower in wheat flower. Even some times I eat whole grain bred. Eat lots of serials.
In third tri. Body and baby needs more calcium iron folic acid and vitamin c. thats why increase these things in your diet.

eat and drink healthy, do excersice regularly and take lot of rest are the key of healthy delivery.

Why do you want to stop gaining weight? Most of the weight gain in pregnancy is because of the water retentions and amniotic fluid which is good for your baby. By preventing weight gain and cutting on your food intake, you might be indirectly harming your baby's growth. 3rd Trimester is very important in baby's brain growth and lungs growth. Please do not stop your self from eating just because you do not want to gain weight. I do not want to be lecturing but think your self....

There is a very good thread started in June board that talks about diet in pregnancy. If you get a chance read it.

No offence ....

Shalu,

I think you got confused again :-)

For your question its not IF YOU gained already 25 pounds that u have to be careful but in other words it is better to be careful IF u think and your doc & CB class instructor agrees that its safer and healthier for you & your baby during labor if you dont gain more than needed, like a minimum of 25lbs but not more than 35lbs.

Most of the pregnancy books comment on this, if u have the Mayo clinic pregnancy book check the introduction section of it on pregnancy weight gain. There is also a book named How to prepare yourself for a safer pregnancy. Its a book your CB instructors encourage you to read. In these books it says that an increase in what you gain during the preg period has also a part in the increased rate in C section.

Take care

Now it makes more sense. So you mean to say that

IF

You are overweight

AND IF

You have already gained 25-35 lbs of weight since your pregnancy, you should decrease your intake of fat and carbo?

I do not know others but I am 5th month running and have gained only 10 lbs so far....How much have you gained?

Shalu,

Thanks for your concern but I dont know whether you have read about the complications that can occur if you are over weight. During your pregnancy you should only gain 25 - 35 pounds total and even if you are having a normal weight gain till your 2nd trimester its better to be cautious about your intake of calorie in the 3rd trim as u tend to put on too much weight if you are not careful.

I did checked with my doc abt this and she too recommended if u r not underweight its better to switch to skim milk, less carbohydrates and stuffs like that. It will help you not to gain weight more than you & your baby need. Like maitrali she too suggested to include more veg & fruit varieties in the diet than too much fatty things.

So I just wanted to know in a typical Indian diet which r the things we should be careful with the serving size. Hope you understood what I meant.

Hi Mansi,

Good that u cut down rice. But donnt cut down your calories inteck.in 3rd tri. our body needs more cal from 100 to 200. try to fill that from veg. ands fruits. go for low fat diet. Go for more veg, fruits, salads and low carbohydrates diet.

Maitrali,

thanks a lot for your suggestions. yes I will make sure that I add more fruits and vegetables in my diet. My doc also suggested this when I asked her the same question. do u know why elders in India say that you should not take complan, horlicks, plantain etc in your 3rd trim? I also have heard that if you are a non-veg its better to reduce your intake of lamb & red meat after your 6th month. They say its to prevent the chance of getting you a BP prob during the last months. Any idea what else we have to be careful abt at this time?

Thanks again for your suggestions and hope you and your little one is doing great.
