Due Date Club October 2006:Breast feeding problem

My baby was born on Oct 6th and I have been breast feeding her for the past 3 weeks supplemented by formula.

My problem is that my nipples are excessively sore even after so many days.Every time I breast feed, the latching on is an agony ( even when I do it after using a hot compress on the breast). When the baby sucks, 80% of the time, there are shooting pains. After each feed, I get a burning sensation for 10-15 minutes.

Also I noticed a white spot on one of my nipples a few days after I started breast feeding. Today when I looked, it had turned like a red blister with a white dot center. When expressing milk, milk does come out from this blister.

I started using the breast pump since last 2 days and the pain is still there. The pain is also there when my top rubs aganst the nipples.

Any ideas on why this could be happening?

Archie - could this be thrush? Any remedies?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Preeti

Hi,

I have a 2 year old son and am telling you from experience.

The beast medicine for sore is Breast Milk itself. Once the baby is done, wipe your nipple with warm wtaer, dry it and apply your BM on the nipples. If you space your feeds then you can apply any antiseptic cream. This should be washed off totally before the next feed. Ghee, Honey are all supposed to soothe. I found aloe vera gel also useful.

The cause - Nipples get sore only when the latch is not right. DO NOT allow baby to feed with just the nipple in the mouth. Make sure that the entire areola is in. This way the baby has to open the mouth wide and sucking work will shift to tounge and roof od the mouth, from the gums.

Break the baby's latch on nipple with your finger, insert the entire areola. It'll take a few times, but if you persistently refuse to feed baby till he gets the latch right, he will in abou 5-6 tries. Till he gets it right everytime, do this. DO NOT feed with jsut the niple.

I've fed him till 14 months and used both electric and manual pumps. If you pump the 'other' breast just after a baby feed, the pain will be less and you'll get more milk. 'coz the let down due to baby's feeding helps you take it out easily. Applying a hot (not scalding) towel on your breast (esp areas where you feel the milk ducts) will help in let down.

Hope you have a great time BF.

Love
P

Hi P,

Thanks for your insight and valuable suggestions! I'll do what you have suggested about wiping with warm water before applying bm and also ghee and honey. Will also try the hot towel treatment. Thanks again!!

take care...

Hi am am mom of 9 months old girl... It had happened to me also... Beleive me the pain is worst and used to stay after 10-15 min of Breast feeding. THere is no solution. Listen to me and dont apply any creams or anything.. Dont breast pump.. see after all we are women and we need to experience more pain than any other creatures in this world. SO be it . You could just be satisfied that your child is geeting your milk which many moms are not able to do... So the pain will go off thinkung about this . and for me conditiosn were in control after 2 months or so

Hi Sowdha,

I went to the doc today and she said that there doesnt seem to be any infection. So it might be a latching problem. However she has given me some yeast infection medicine for 10 days just in case there is some infection present inside the body even though there are no visible signs.

I'm also going to met a lactation consul next week to make sure my latch is ok.

I also bought some nipple shields today and its giving me a lot of relief from friction from clothes...

how are things with you?

take care,
Preeti

Hi Sowdha,

Yes, it does pain when I express milk via breast pump, but it is much more bearable than when the baby latches on.

I'm using the Medella dual electric pump. It's pretty easy to use and it takes me about 20 min to pump both breasts together.

I' going to the doc tomorrow morning to find out why so much pain is there...

will let you know what she reports..

keep posted about your progress also....

take care and all the best...

Hi Sowdha,

Thanks for the support!! Since yesterday I have been exclusively expressing milk through breast pump. This was because I read on the net that I need to give 2-3 days for my nipples to heal if they have been blistered by incorrect latch and positioning. Before that I was feeding my baby about 20 min on each side...and I was doing this every 1&1/2 to 2 hours since the baby would get hungry very fast...sometimes she would drink from one breast and then fall asleep and then wake up after 30 min to feed again...kind of cluster feeding...

I'll try the coconut oil today for the pain...

Do you get pain when your shirt rubs against the sore nipples? Mine do that, so I'm kinda walking hunched like these days...:( I read on the net that shooting pain, burning sensation and nipples being so sore that wearing anything over them causes friction - can be sign of thrush (yeast infection)...so am worried about that...

I am praying for all this to get better soon...

Take care and I hope your pain goes away soon...
