Due Date Club February 2006:Archie, need advice !

Hi Archie,
I will be completing 39 weeks this Friday. The dr has called me for an internal examination and NST on Thursday. She says that if things look good, she might induce me and get the baby delivered on the same day. Her only reason being that because I would have completed 39 weeks of pregnancy, baby has matured completely. Now, I don't know whether to agree with her and go ahead and get an induction, or wait for labour to start on its own. I was thinking that if I still don't deliver after completing 41 weeks, I would opt for an induction. Do you agree with what the dr says? OR would you rather have me wait for the process to start on its own?
Thanks, SHilpi

Shilpi,
how small the baby is?
Is it 5 pounds and 14 onces today or around the induction. If you answer yes then it's not low weight birth.

If baby is above 5 pound 8 ounces it would not necessarily categorize as a IUGR case, because your Dr. believes that baby has gained weight lately. In IUGR baby fails to gain weight and that's why rush to deliver.

I would suggest not to cross words of your Ob and work with it. However if you can hold baby in uterus till EDD is good idea.

let me know.

Thanks Archie !
Actually the only problem was that the baby was smaller. But now she seems ti have gained wt, but still is under weight by US standards. In India it seems delivering a 5.5 lbs baby is absolutely normal. She says that if babies are smaller there might be some fetal stress. I don't mind going in for an induction if there is a risk to the baby, but do not want to go for one, just because I have completed 39 weeks and the baby is mature enuff. I will try speaking with her and tell her to schedule an induction on my EDD - which is 3rd Feb. I would rather wait and see if I can go in labor myself at least till the due date. I wanted to get your thoughts on whether I should just go ahead with induction, instead of waiting for another week, as the doctor says, or wait instead.
Thanks, Shilpi

shilpi,
it gets almost difficult to remember all cases, but did you have gd?
If yes then getting baby around or before edd is good idea as there is chance of macrosomic baby usually direct to C-section.
after 36 weeks completion no worry on induction.
you can choose to induce or wait after discussing with your Dr.
To me does not seem problem unless you want to wait till normal labor starts.
