my son was born on 7th sept. I underwent an emergency C-section as the baby in distress. He had MAS and was administered antibiotics. I had gone for his 2.5 month checkup recently. The following are the observations

weight at birth 2.36kg
weight at 1.5 months 4.3kg
weight at 2.5 months 5 kg

Height at birth 48cm
Height at 2.5 months 59.5cm

head circumference at birth 32cm
HC at 1.5 montsh 37.5cm
HC at 2.5 months 39.5cm

i was told by the doc that the weight gain is on the higher side. He is an exclusively breastfed baby. He has reached his milestone of looking at the face and smiling. he also coos and makes noises if we speak to him. he is also able to hold his head up for a short time.

can u pls advice if i should be concerned abt the weight gain/ HC?

thanks in advance
Shanti

1.his wght is gain is higher thn expected. but i will not consider that as of now,,as babies have growth spurt and due to that the wght gain is sometimes double thn expectd..being the age of infancy, this is not right time to tthink about it. once your baby stabilzes with growth and comes on solids and starts cruising,,its thn the actual wght gain is reflected.as grwth spurts wght gains are relativly less after 6months...
unless otherwise his growth % in wght increases exceptnlly...

since he was born with MAS,,the only risk factr that i see if at all your baby is havng ne respirtry probs or ne probs relatd to lungs....severly affected babies, are at risk for developing chronic long diseases and may also develop abnormaly and hearing loss...
there are no other complications involved that i can see or is in my reach.

2. HC is also bigger comp until the baby is of 8months,,once crossed 8months, the body tones up well because of cruisng capabilities and organs start to tone up in actual genetic makeup. until then, most babies have shown big figures in hc,,let your dr decide about it as he checks your baby physically,,he will be better person to judge dpending on how good the muscle tone and fat levels are.
3. as far as he is reaching his milestones on time and is growing good,,there is no worry involved..
my only worry is when the baby is born in distress, sometimes the stress levels continue upto 3mnths and this affcts baby diet and grwth,,so in that he tends to drink more or less dpnding on how he handles it. some babies drink more to cope with body stress and some dont drink at all..your concern about wght gain is qute understood considrng that your baby wght gain might be the reason that he is still under stres..so keep him relaxed,,make sure to keep him busy with lots of tummy time and keep him fresh and feed him as often as needed..
give him playtime and keep checking on his develping milestones,,ask your dr about milestone and development charts,,it will help you get an idea about what to expect when.
the other thing is,,if at all your baby starts showing ne signs like poor activity level, has lot of night sweats or ne temperature,,gets ne unexplained coughing signs,,shows discomfort while breathing after a good playtime,,or difficulty in breathing,,or suddently stops responding even the sound is next to his ears,,,thn he needs to be checked by your dr immedtly...otherwise all is going fine.

the good thing is your baby is exclusivly bf..so it is unlikely that wght gain will make him obese,,

so thats all is in my reach and thats all i can help you !
good luck

hello jayashree
dont get afraid and dont loose hopes, your son is absolutely fine, and give him the proper tuition and avoid more playing periods of his, and you should teach him at home when you will get free time.... - praglabh [View Message]
