Hi Friends...Would like to tell you all and warn you for some alarming signs in Pregnancy... Im on my 30th week right now.
On 3rd Jan morning( 27th Week), I did not get any foetal movements and complained to the doc...who sent me for investigations and found that the amniotic fluid has decreased to an alarming level...I was put to bed rest for a wk but the condition did not improve...later I was hospitalised and out on IV fluids..This situation is medically termed as \";Oligohydromonous\";.Oligohydramnios is the term for too little amniotic fluid. This condition affects about 8 percent of pregnancies. It can develop at any time in pregnancy, although it is most common in the last trimester.
Oligohydramnios: Too Little Amniotic Fluid
What You Need to Know About Amniotic Fluid
The amniotic fluid that surrounds your baby is indeed a magic fluid. This clear-colored liquid cushions and protects the baby, provides it with fluids and is crucial in normal development. Your baby breathes this fluid into its lungs and swallows it; this helps promote the healthy growth of the lungs and gastrointestinal tract. Your amniotic fluid also helps the baby move around, aiding in normal development of muscle and bone.
The amniotic sac that contains your baby begins to form about 12 days after conception. Amniotic fluid begins forming at that time, too. In the early weeks of pregnancy, amniotic fluid consists mainly of water supplied by the mother. After about 12 weeks, your baby’s urine makes up most of the fluid.

The amount of amniotic fluid increases until about 28-32 weeks of pregnancy. At that time you have about one quart of fluid. After that time, the level stays about the same until about 38 to 40 weeks, when your baby is considered full-term. After that, the level begins to decrease.

In some pregnancies, there may be too little or too much amniotic fluid. These conditions are referred to as oligohydramnios and polyhydraminos. Both can sometimes cause problems for mother and baby, or be a sign of other problems. In the majority of cases, however, the baby is born healthy.

Please be VERY VERY CAREFUL and keep a check on Baby's movements...if the movement is not good or less, pls rush to your doctor and also consult a FOETAL EXPERT. Pls. remember Oral Fluids and rest is NOT the solution, you need INTRAVENOUS (IV) fluids to be injected to help increase your fluid..

The safe level is 7-8 cms, and anything below that is alarming..

Please take care....as I was very much mentally upset with this condition which came as a blow to me.. i was on IV fluids for 4 days and now my level has gone up to 5-6 cms in last U/s on 15th Jan..My next u/s & doppleris on 23rd Jan..should keep all of you posted on what happened..

~Thanks to each one of you for your heartfelt wishes, which has helped ,me a lot and baby has also responded to the fluid treatment..

Till then take Care...

Hi Aditi,

Glad to hear that you and your baby are doing fine. Pray that everything will go on smooth for you.

I am in my 27th week and my doc visits have been very simple. I am able to feel movements but I am not quite sure abt whether its less or enough. Do you maintain a count ??.

Take care,
Kalpana

Aditi, I am glad things are better for you now. Thanks a lot for the info as well. My doctor visits seem to be too simple so far. she just does the urine test and checks heart beat. I am worried now, do I need to request some special tests just to be sure? I am 23 weeks and though I can feel movements mostly after eating its very sporadic. Please advise.
Thanks - Selvi

Aditi,

Its so nice to hear that you are feeling better & the fluid level is increased. I am in my 25th wk now and had an appointment with my doc on 19th & what she told me is that the reason for this condition can be due to loss of amniotic fluid in someway.

Do u remember having any sort of heavy discharge before noticing the decrease in babies movements? Its so alarming to hear that, how hard we try to have a normal preg there will be something or other to keep u worried...

I will remember ur warning & would try to drink more water. Thanks a lot for your post and please take good care of yourself.

Yes, looks like we have a similar problem. My fluid count was 8-9 which the doctor said was still less for 29 weeks. She's adviced me to take lots of water and have to go back on the 23rd. Any suggestions from your doc? I am worried. But the movements measured on the machine were higher than what I was actually feeling. Did you undergo the graph test? Moreover my baby is is breech position right now. But the doc says that it can keep changing positions and there is lots of time for that. Concerned about that too. I have also been reading a lot about amniotic fluid today and not feeling too happy with it. Anyway hope things do get better. Take care and drink lots of water even during your sleeping hours. Get up at intervals and do it........sharmila
