Normal Delivery:How painful is it?

I am a little scared about going through labour becasue I have been hearing horror stories...of women crying and screaming in pain...on wives sqeeezing their husbands hand so badly that they also scream in pain (seen in movies!). What are all your experiences?

Hi Monisha,
Nothing would happen to you,you have to be very strong and you have to bear the pains only for few minutes and you can do it also.So be strong and just think that you can do it.

Hi Monisha,
I too heard that there would be heavy labor pains during normal delivery. You have to be bold and strong. And you have to hold patience for some time and later you will not face any problem.

Hi monisha,
It is the common problem for a lady to bear all these and if you ask me it would be better you would say yes for normal because it will help you in all aspects in future only instead of cygeriane.

Hello Monica,
Obviously it would be heavy pain and as woman you have to bear it.It is better to get labor pains instead of doing operation because you will face problems in future if you do operation.I wish you would take good decision only.

hi monisha,
it is not painful at all. dont be scared. the pain is certainly bearable and it is a wonderful experience, that every lady should go thro in her life i feel. it is more gratifying than a caeser section. the moment you see the baby, i promise, the pain vanishes. it is certainly worth going thro, according to me. i was also scared, hearing the outcry i heard out of labor room whenever i went for ante natal chek ups. my mother used to reassure me, dont get scared. this girl does not have the patience and she is very fussy i guess, u can bear the pain and it is wonderful. iam passing this to you, it is wonderful. please go thro this, you young proud mother.
all the best and happy motherhood....

Hii monisha, just dont worry abt it.When i was expecting for the 1st time i was the same though.I was in labor for more than 12 hrs n they were horrible ofcourse, but when the doc came n started all the arrangements for me delievery i was happy tht i was going to know wht the surprise is.n then the doc told me to push only when i get a contraction n not to scream. She told me to just push frm down as if i was constipated.there were 10 other nurses to encourage me to push hard.In the 2nd push my doc told tht she could feel the head,so i had to push just a little more.In the 4th push my sweet heart was out n striaght on me n i could c tht it was a boy n my hubby was out all jumping. So all the best for your delievery too.

hi monisha,
i have a 2year old son.i got admitted at 10.30pm as soon as my water broke.i was able to bear the pain until 3am but after which i decided to take epidural.why not make use of it when u can.even though i was dialating good and quick i had tough time in pushing.i was completely dialated at 7am the next day and was told to start pushing after some time.but it was 10.19am that my little bundle came out.so i wont say it was easy for me.but i did not know the intense contraction pains as i had epidural.i had a tought time pushing my baby's head and his pulse started going down.so the nurses fought with me harder so that i do not wind up with a C-section unnecesarily.once the crown started showing up the nurses brought a big dressing mirror and placed in front of me so that i could see my baby coming.it was a kind of encouragement for me.so once i saw the crown i started to push more with a fury.and all of a sudden the baby came out.i was finally done with it.at that moment i forgot all the pain that i felt earlier.going to a lamaze class will surely help.so will ur partner.good luck and lots of pushing.

Hi mom to be - I will not lie and tell you that it doesn't hurt. Labor pains are just that...pain but with the right support and breathing you will be able to endure. Don't try to be a superwoman, if you need an epidural, ask for it. After my son came out...I couldn't even remember what my contractions felt like. You forget about them so fast when you see your little one. I am expecting my second now and I am really excited. Just relax, breathe and you will have yourself a little baby very soon.

Lots of luck to you all!

Hi Monisha,
I delivered a baby girl on 21st of Dec.I had normal delivery and i would say labor pain is not that bad.I was admitted to the hospital at 4.30 and my baby was out by 8.20.I was dialating very fast , so was getting intense contractions too.I was stuck the bed and at one point i did ask for epidural thinking that i wouldn't be able to go thru it but they couldn't give me that since i was dilating too fast.As Kalyani mentioned the contractions are like period cramps and not like what they show in movies.I concentrated on breathing and my lamaze classes came to be of some use there.I also hired doula from hospital. She was of great help to me in coping with the pain. When u get contractions don't think of the next one , just deal with the current one - breathing will be very useful if u can concentrate well and ask your support person to massage you - you may feel pressure at lower back , upper thighs etc.Once the contraction ends , relax yourself and conserve your energy for the next one.Hope this helps.Goodluck to you.

Hi Monisha,
Never let the horror stories sink in your brain that will kind of hypnotize you. I have a baby and i was ready to have another immediately but wanted to wait atleast for 2 years. Talk to your OB/GYN about Epidural, this will make the labour a breeze.I won't say it is not at all painful but it is not as bad as some people project it to be. Any way once the baby is in your arms you will definetly think it is worth the pain. The drama in the movies is trust me a drama so don't believe that crap. The contractions are more like the cramps that you get during your periods, som times very intense and som times very mild. Make sure the contraction is 5 mins apart before calling your hospital. Try to eat light food before going to the hospital for energy. Good luck and have a breezy delivery.

When I went through my labour, I was in terrible pain, and that ofcourse is an understatement. The doctor was aasking me to push, but for the life of me I couldn't figure out how to push, afterall you haven't been taught what kind of push is required for the vagina, all you know is how to push for your stools!!! So there I was pushing so hard as if I was constipated, and ofcourse all my effort was being directed in the wrong direction!

When it was time to push my doc told me " Push as though you are in Bathroom".These were her words she meant that i should push as though am constipated. But she also told me to put the chin down and also not to open mouth and to hold the breath while pushing.I took deep breath just when the contraction began and then pushed .........i too did wrong in between i heard doc saying "you are not doing correctly" but ultimately baby came out very fast.I could feel the pressure down there but couldn't feel head coming out at all.I was surprised whent they announced that head is out but i could feel when baby's body came out.

Dear All,

I'm Dr. Meghna Bharath. I'm a strong proponent of Natural Birthing.

In the run-up to becoming a Mom myself, I prepared for Natural birth and delivered naturally. Recently I encouraged and supported my younger sister and close friends deliver naturally as well [through remote advice, since we were across a 10-hour timezone :)].
