Do you consider Ayurveda to be an effective and practical science of medicine? Would you opt for Ayurveda to treat yourself or your children? Do you know cases where Ayurveda was especially effective?

A vaidya is a doctor who practices Ayurveda. He determines the patients problem using the methods of diagnosis that are part ofthe Ayrvedic system of healing.

One interesting form of diagnosis is feeling the pulse beat of the patient using his fingers which enables the vaidya to come up with a startlingly accurate diagnosis.

A vaidya is a term for a person profesionally trained in Ayurvedic medicine. ´ Vaidya´ in Sanskrit literally means ´ master of knowledge´ as ´ vidya´ is knowledge. There is nothing wizardly about it. It is another term like a ´ homeopath´ or a yoga instructor.

Ayurveda does not work. Traditions and culture are fine for spirituality. But not when it comes to your health. Here is what that can happen if we apply Ayurveda:
1. Complete cure may not occur and by the time you realise this, it will be too late.
2. Adulterating the powders used in Ayurvedic treatment is very easy.
3. It may be popular among Hindus. But will people from other religions opt for it?

I now agree with Parashuram. I do not mean to say " Ayurveda is all hogwash" . The correct thing to say is: " The quacks are all hogwash." I think we should have a regulatory board for Ayurvedic medicines to solve the problem.

Demo bhai, your arguments are faulty.

Dont blame the tree if you tamper with its fruits. Ayurveda is nothing to do with religion or spirituality. The ancient rishis wre like scientists, they actually consumed every herb to see what happens. Now the herbs are contaminated and the companies corrupt-whose fault is it, Ayurveda or the people? Tell me.

I agree Ayurveda is all hogwash. C´ mon, any of those medicines can easily be adulterated. When snake poison can be termed natural, poison ivy as herbal, what stops the mafia from passing their homemade concoctions as Ayurved?

Agree with Demo about the adulterating powers. I take that you need to really watch your diet when you are on Ayurvedic medications.

Hi Demosthenes, I think you are quite confused here. Ayurveda refers to a system of medicine that has it´ s roots in ancient India. However, its application as a healing science has nothing to do with ´ tradition and culture´ . Many modern institutions have roots in history, and does that make them necessarily ineffective?

The arguments you put up, such as complete cure and adultration can also apply to mainstream medicine. As for your third point, Ayurveda may have been invented by in India but enjoys a good following worldwide.

Ayurvedic formulations are routinely available as off-the-counter remedies for various health conditions and you have in all probability used them yourself!

I believe in Ayurveda completely. I know most people prefer to consider only allopathy as ' real medicine' but truth is, holistic medicine works better. Allopathic medicines have tons of side effects. Ayurveda has none. Just because it comes from our traditions, we tend to disregard it. My parents and forefathers have always used Ayurveda. I use it in conjunction with modern medicine. I take a lot of churnas and powders for digestive problems. They work extremely well. I think however that Ayurveda should be merged into one' s lifestyle. It' s not just about curing one particular problem. It is about living simply and holistically.
