Parenting Issues

Parenting issues test the parenting skills of a parent. Here are some issues related with parenting and ways to deal effectively with parenting issues.

Becoming a parent that is, a new mom or dad is a tough task at the onset. But as the feeling gradually sinks in, you get to learn a lot through trial and error methods and support of your family members, you simultaneously gain the confidence to deal with the condition better.

Giving birth to a baby and taking care of it is a challenging task and being humans, we are all attributed with limited patience and experience. So it is only but natural that you will be faced with certain issues related with parenting, but you will also get to resolve them with a bit of understanding and realisation.

Here are some simple tips on how to deal effectively with parenting issues:

Criticism

This can be considered as the fundamental parenting issue. With most families being nuclear these days, we often find ourselves in a situation where we have people from the extended families, friends, colleagues and even neighbours pouring in with unsolicited advice. While it is great to have a support group and an active social circle, at times it can get a tad bit irksome when these people drop in critical comments on how you ought to be parenting your kid. Here you simply need to behave maturely and stay alienated from such interventions. It is true that you cannot shut out people from your family or life just like that, but you can make sure that their comments do affect you from doing what you think is the best for your kid. If you are confident, stay relaxed, if you are confused, seek expert opinion.

Interfering In-Laws

This is a sort of a follow through of the above point, the only difference being it is a specialised point. We may have in laws from sides who interfere on the method of your parenting. They not only come in with advices, but try to direct you on how you ought to parent. Although they wish the best for their grandchild, but often seem to forget that the method of parenting that they have followed had yielded results then, but today, it is a different set-up and the method and style of parenting has also evolved and changed accordingly. You need to patiently sit with them and explain the situation.

Sacrificing the ‘Me’ Time

With the birth of a baby, parents often get so engaged with the new born that they forget that they need to spare sometime for themselves as well. You need to take care and focus on all your relationships simultaneously. While you fulfill your responsibilities towards the baby, make sure that you are not ignoring the need of your partner to relax a bit. Share the responsibilities with understanding so that each of you gets the desired time to relax and unwind. This will make the bond only stronger.

Disciplining the Kid

This can be a serious parenting issue when one of you believes that it is correct to be strict with rules, while the other believes in leniency. This can lead to serious argument where the kid also gets indirectly involved and affected. He witnesses the differences of opinion between parents and tries and learns to manipulate situations to his advantage. This is surely not something that you would want as a parent. It is thus advisable to sit and talk and discuss the situation and try to understand each other’s point of view when you see that you are not agreeing on a certain issue.

Finally, it is a fact that interpersonal relationship between the spouses play a significant role in resolving and successfully dealing with the issues that might arise. Get to know each other’s expectations, get to know your partner better, be supportive and follow this up with the undeniable responsibility towards the new born. You will soon find that issues are getting resolved almost dramatically and magically.

What are common parenting issues? How should parents deal with criticism? How can parents effectively discipline a kid? Discuss here.
