How to Get Relief from Varicose Veins during Pregnancy

Varicose veins are very discomforting during pregnancy. But it is possible to get relief from this problem by following simple remedies. Read on to find out how to get relief from varicose veins.

If you are pregnant and have started to notice the development of varicose veins, you are probably not alone. Many women first develop varicose veins or spider veins during the period of pregnancy and see a gradual increase in the intensity of veins with each subsequent pregnancy.

The good news is that varicose or spider veins tend to decrease with time and generally diminish gradually after you give birth. However, there are a variety of ways to treat and manage varicose veins while you are pregnant.

The Cause of Varicose Veins during Pregnancy

In pregnancy, as the uterus grows so does the pressure on the right side of your body as well as pelvic muscles leading to an increase in the pressure on the veins of your legs. As you are expecting, the amount of blood in your body is already high adding further burden on your veins. This leads to the formation of swollen and enlarged veins which are generally knotted and blue in appearance and can generally begin to show by around 29 weeks of pregnancy.

Proper Diet Intake to Treat Varicose Veins

A healthy diet intake is essential for proper blood circulation and to help manage pain associated with varicose veins. A diet containing fruits, in the form of juice, such as raspberries, strawberries and blueberries contain healthy pigments that will strengthen the walls of your veins and ease the discomfort caused by existing varicose veins. Similarly, by adding more fiber and Vitamin E in your diet through natural sources like wheat-germ, you can tone your blood vessels. You must consult your obstetrician before including the above mentioned fruits and food items in your diet.

Drinking plenty of water and staying hydrated throughout the day can make varicose veins less painful and more manageable. Avoiding the intake of refined and processed foods and caffeinated drinks like tea and coffee can help improve varicose veins and treat them efficiently.

Exercise Regularly to Get Relief from Varicose Veins

Weight gain is a natural phenomenon associated with pregnancy. But staying physically active is important to reduce excessive fat accumulation and ensuring proper blood circulation throughout the body. To get relief from varicose veins and decreasing occurrence, you can try gentle physical exercises like walking, low intensity yoga and swimming after consulting your obstetrician. Deep breathing exercises done under the supervision of certified trainer will also help aid your circulation and help prevent varicose veins. Try spending about 15 minutes every day in a relaxed position with your feet raised above your hips and inhaling deeply to promote better blood circulation. Regular pelvic exercises can help you get relief from varicose veins as well as prevent them from getting worse with time. You must practice all the above mentioned exercises after consulting your obstetrician and under the supervision of a certified trainer.

Wear Comfortable Clothing to Reduce Varicose Veins

As you progress with pregnancy, your baby bump will grow and you might be tempted to wear your old clothes for convenience. But wearing tight clothes, especially around the groin area, can make your varicose veins worse. Always make sure you wear clothes which includes underwear that are comfortable and do not cling to the body. Avoid wearing tight belts around the waist, shoes or socks which are too tight or stretch your calf muscle excessively.

Relieving Stress can Decrease Varicose Veins

Straining your body due to pregnancy related factors like constipation can also cause occurrence of varicose veins around thighs and rectum. To get relief from the pain associated with varicose veins, you can reduce physical stress and excessive strain applied on body when pregnant. Keeping your weight in check under the supervision of your obstetrician is another efficient way to decrease excessive strain on your body and get relief from the discomfort caused by varicose veins.

Although, there is no real medical risk associated with occurrence of varicose veins in pregnancy, these can become uncomfortable with time and may become the cause of self esteem for many expecting mothers. By using the above tips, you can manage and get relief from varicose veins that can help to improve your appearance after your delivery.
